Landing Gear

The seminar discusses the landing gear of airplanes, including its purpose, types (tail dragger, unconventional, and tricycle), and components such as struts, shock absorbers, and brakes. It highlights the importance of regular maintenance and inspections due to the stresses on landing gear, as well as future advancements in materials and technology. The document concludes with the significance of thorough inspections to ensure safety and functionality.

WHAT IS
LANDING
GEARS...?
LANDING GEAR OF AN
AIRCRAFT IS A
ARRANGEMENT WHICH IS
USE-

-TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT

OF THE AIRCRAFT WHILE ON
THE GROUND.

-ABSORB THE SHOCK LOAD

CAUSED BY TAKE-OFF,
LANDING AND TAXIING.
TYPES OF LANDING GEAR

1-TAIL DRAGGER 2-UNCONVENTIONAL 3-TRICYCLE

WHAT IS TAIL
DRAGGER
LANDING GEAR?
-The main gear are
located forward of the
aircraft’s center of
gravity, and a third
small wheel at the
tail.
-most often seen in
older general aviation
airplanes.
-tailwheel is castered
free
WHAT IS
UNCONVENTIOAL
LANDING GEAR ?
-Plane use
unconventional landing
gear when they're not
going to be landing on
flat ground.
-They use pontoons to
land on water and skis to
land on snow.
WHAT IS TRICYCLE
LANDING GEAR?
-Landing gear, arranged
in a tricycle fashion.
-The tricycle
arrangement has one gear
strut in front, called the
nose wheel.
-Two or more main gear
struts slightly aft of the
center of gravity.
-Tricycle gear is
essentially the reverse of
tail dragger
PARTS OF A LANDING GEAR

 1-STRUT
 2-SHOCK ABSORBER
 3-EXTRACTION AND RETRACTION MECHANISM
 4-BRAKES
 5-WHEELS
 6-TYRES
STRUT AND SHOCK ABSORBER

 OLEO STRUT IS MAINLY USED IN MODERN

AIRCRAFT.
 IT CUSHIONES THE IMPACT OF LANDING WHILE
TAXIING.
 IF WE GOES THROUGH THE STRUCTURE OF OLEO
STRUT A PISTON AND CYLINDER IS USED WHICH ACT
LIKE A DAMPER.
 NITROGEN IS FILLED IN CYLINDER WHICH ACT LIKE
A SPRING DURING LANDING AND TAKE OFF.
 NITROGEN IS USUALLY USE BECAUSE IT LESS
LIKELY CAUSES THE CORROSION.
 IT WORKS AS A SHOCK ABSORBER IN AIRCRAFT.
TYPES OF SHOCK STRUTS

METERING PIN TYPE METERING TUBE TYPE NOSE GEAR STRUTS

BREAK

• Are used to stop, or help to stop, an aircraft.

• They are also used to steer the aircraft by differential action, to hold the aircraft
stationary when parked and while it is running up its engines, and to control speed
while taxiing.
• Most aircraft use disk brakes. The primary variables to consider are disk material
and diameter and the number of disks. Brakes usually fitted just to the main
wheels.
• For large transport aeroplanes the main power source for brakes in normal and
alternate operations is hydraulic.
• Skid control systems are used to minimize stopping distance and to reduce the
possibility of excessive tire wear and blowout caused by excessive skidding.
WHEELS AND TYRES
• TUBELESS TYRES ARE USED IN AIRCRAFT HAVING FOLLOWING ADVANTAGE.
• 7½% weight saving.
• 10ºC cooler running.
• Less danger of deflation by puncture.
• Reduced permeability losses.
LANDING ON FAILURE OF LANDING GEAR
BELLY LANDING OR GEAR UP LANDING

 A BELLY LANDING OR GEAR UP LANDING REFERS TO THE LANDING WHEN

AN AIRCREFT LANDS WITHOUT ITS LANDING GEAR.

 BELLY LANDING OR GEAR UP LANDING OCCURS WHEN A MECHANICAL

MALFUNCTION PREVENTS THE PILOT FROM EXTANDING THE LANDING GEAR OR
THE PILOT FORGET TO EXTEND THE LANDING GEAR.
 BELLY LANDING CARRY THE RISK THAT THE AIRCRAFT MAY FLIP OVER OR
CATCH FIRE IF IT LANDS TOO FAST OR TOO HARD.
FUTURE OF LANDING GEAR

 SOME TYPE OF COMPOSITE MATERIAL OR ALLOY CAN BE USED TO REDUCE THE WEIGHT
OF LANDING GEAR.

 MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION IS THAT MATERIAL SHOULD BE CORROSIVE RESISTIVE.

 EHA TECHNOLOGY IS BEING USED IN THE LANDING GEAR FROM THE 90S.

 NOW EMA TECHNOLOGY IS USED IN THE LANDING GEAR AS A BACK UP MODE.

 FUTURE OF LANDING GEAR MAY BE BRIGHT AFTER MAKING THE LANDING GEAR ELECTRICAL
AND AUTONOMOUS.
CONCLUSION

• The moving parts and dirty environment of the landing gear make this an area of regular
maintenance.
• Because of the stresses and pressures acting on the landing gear, inspection, servicing, and other
maintenance becomes a continuous process. The most important job in the maintenance of the
aircraft landing gear system is thorough accurate inspections.
• To properly perform inspections, all surfaces should be cleaned to ensure that no trouble spots are
undetected. Periodically, it is necessary to inspect shock struts, trunnion and brace assemblies and
bearings, shimmy dampers, wheels, wheel bearings, tires, and brakes.
• Landing gear position indicators, lights, and warning horns must also be checked for proper
operation. During all inspections and visits to the wheel wells, ensure all ground safety locks are
installed.
• Inspect landing gear wheels for cleanliness, corrosion, and cracks.
• Check wheel tie bolts for looseness..
