Unit 1.

Historical Antecedents
in the Course of Science and
Technology
S
Learning Outcomes
1. Explain the impact of the development of
science and technology to environments.
2. Discuss the roles and relationships
between science and technology.
Chapter I:
Introduction of Science
and Technology
What is Science?
• From the Latin “scientia” (knowledge).
1. ‘Science’ is a body of knowledge that
Chapter I: seeks to understand the natural world. In
this sense, ‘science’ seeks to understand
and explain natural things and
phenomena such as pollination, volcanic
eruptions, and constellations.

2. ‘Science’ is an intellectual activity.
• It refers to the process of systematic
and objective investigation or
understanding of the natural world.
Chapter I: This process includes observation, and
experimentation.

3. ‘Science’ is a personal and social activity.

• This makes science a way for humans to
understand themselves and their world.
It also means that science is connected
with everyone’s life and the society.
Why Science? Who does Science?
• Science is the pursuit and application of
knowledge and understanding of the
Chapter I: natural and social world following a
systematic methodology based on
evidence.
• A scientist is someone who
systematically gathers and uses research
and evidence, to make hypotheses and
test them, to gain and share
understanding and knowledge.
What is Technology?
Came from the Greek words:
• “techne” (skill, craftsmanship, art)
• “logos” (discourse, reason)
1. ‘Technology’ as artifacts
Chapter I: • In this definition, ‘technology’ refers to products,
inventions and outputs such as the microscope,
solar panel and light bulb.

2. ‘Technology’ as a technique
• In this definition, ‘technology’ refers to
practices, methods or steps such as genetic
engineering, rice planting and welding.
Chapter I:
3. ‘Technology’ as a personal and social
activity

This makes technology a tool for humans to

improve themselves, and their everyday
life. It also means that technology is
connected with the society and everyone’s
life.
The Role of Science and Technology
• Science and technology make life easier and more
comfortable for humans.

• Science and technology enable us to save both time and

money.
• Science and technology open up new perspectives of
understanding.
• Science and technology aid in the advancement of the field of
education.

• Science and technology contribute to the development

of treatment and therapeutic equipment.
Impacts of Science and Technology
• In the society and the environment - Technology often
has a more direct effect on society as it solves practical
problems and serves human needs.
• The effects of technology on society have been both
positive and negative. While technology has made it
easier to connect with others, access information, and
improve medical care, it has also led to job loss,
cyberbullying, and technology addiction.
Impacts of Science and Technology
• On human life - Science and technology have simplified
our lives. They have made our sleeping, cooking, and
commuting processes easier and faster, respectively, with the
help of objects such as A.C., microwaves, and vehicles
• On the economy - Technological progress allows for the
more efficient production of more and better goods and
services
Science and Technology
•Science and technology have a dual interaction which
means that they influence each other.
•Science is required in the development of technologies. In
the same way, technology is needed to advance science.

SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY
Science, Technology and Society
Given that both science and technology are social activities,
they also have dual interactions with society.

SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY

SOCIETY
Science and Technology in Environment

• Science is used in manufacturing to design new products,

improve the efficiency of production processes, and
investigate the environmental impact of manufacturing.
• Science is used in environmental protection to study the
impact of human activity on the environment, develop
new methods of cleaning up polluted areas, and develop
strategies for long-term development.
Conclusion/ Summary

• The development of science and technology was borne out of the

needs of society. For instance, the development of machines was
driven by society's desire to make things easier and faster.
• On the other hand, science and technology also influenced the
society. Today, in the age of information technology, new habits,
lifestyles and activities such as social networking have developed.
Conclusion/ Summary

• Scientific and technological developments affected the

environment. These developments required a lot of raw
resources, resulting to massive activities that exploited the
natural resources. On one hand, this challenged the scientific
and technological communities to find ways to save the
environment.
