TIME MANAGEMENT

QUICK ACTIVITY
1) Make a list of the things that you are/will be balancing
in your life, alongside college work, this semester, then
share them/compare them in small groups.

2) Then, think of three main goals

you have this semester (could be
academic or non academic)
QUICK ACTIVITY

1) Now make a list of the things that you do that are

time wasters.

2) Order them in a list of those

which you spend most time
doing.

3) Add to your list of goals, spending

less time on time wasting activities
9 Time Management
Techniques
1. Make To Do Lists
• To do lists help you priotitize tasks based on
due dates, but can also be selected based on
your mood…
2. Assessing
Tasks
• Feeling anxious? Don't launch in and
overwhelm yourself.
• Start small - is there a task that that doesn't
take much "thinking" or has that could be
completed quickly? This will give you a sense
of accomplishment and (hopefully) energy
and motivation to move onto larger tasks.
• Which tasks will take more thought and time?
• Mark in a time estimate next to each task.
3. Multitasking?
Don't do it!
• Studies show that multitasking can interfere with
academic results by causing a drop in IQ
• Why? Students don't absorb information or reach
their full potential.
• Wasting time: causes mental blocks that can cost as
much as 40 percent of someone's productive time.
• Solution to combat the urge?
• What are your most common distractions?
• Can you turn off the devices or applications?
https://www.apa.org/
• Key point: TURN OFF DEVICES AND DON'T SWITCH
topics/research/ TASKS UNTIL THE ONE AT HAND IS COMPLETED.
4. Routines
• Good routines will get to into productive habits
and help you accomplish more.
• Think about when to carve out time for reading
and school work and weave it into a daily
routine.
• When is the quietest time in your home? Is it
early morning? If so, regularly use that time as
your study time.
• Setting out a specific time to read and study will
lower your stress and anxiety levels over time
5. Work in intervals
Pomodoro Technique
• Based on 25 minutes of solid work
• 5 minute break
• Take a longer break after 4th pomodoro
• Set a timer to keep you on track

5. Work in intervals
Pomodoro Technique
• Working in increments/with intervals can:
• Make work less daunting.
• Make work more focused and time productive
• Prevents extended periods of procrastination
• Helpful for students with ADHD - decreases
distraction
• Helps avoid burnout
• Improves memory

6. Time off Do not feel
guilty!!
• Taking planned breaks can benefit your
mental health AND the quality of
your school work.
• How to rest?
• Watch a movie

7. Delegate/ask for help
• Are other tasks impeding on your time
management?
• Home life? Household chores/errands?
• Family/roomates?
• Share chores and resist urge to do it all
8. Don't overcommit - say
no! • While I encourage you to be active and
involved, don't say yes to everything
• Select extra curricula activities carefully:
• Chose activities/groups/commitments
that are relevant to your path and of
genuine interest.
9. Assess PT work impact
• Studies show that high hours worked in
a job negatively impact school
work (Singh, Chang and Dika, 2007)
• Students are less likely to complete
on time (Darolia, 2014)

ORGANISATION AND PLANNING

What are the main pieces of advice that to got

from the video?
PLANNING AHEAD
Find an organisational tool that works for you
(paper or digital) where you will put:
• Deadlines/due dates for evaluations/school
work
• Identify times where you must work on certain
projects. This allows you to visually see when
you should start work on any project/study for
an exams
• You could add the following:
• Work shifts
CHOSING A PLANNER
Pick the one you are the most likely to check
regularly
• I use my Apple Calendar on my MacBook
• I write down all my ideas for courses in Notes
in my phone.
• Physical versions:
• School agendas or other store bought ones
• Digital versions:
• Apple/google calendar
• Outlook agenda (provided)
ORGANISING NOTES/WORK
• Separate notebooks/folders for your different
courses
• Avoid overcrowded desktop
• You need a quick way to identify where each
assignment is/where you downloaded the
instructions (tree structure).
TASK FOR THE REST OF CLASS
1) Open your agenda and have access to your course outlines.
• In your agenda (digital/physical)
• Write down the due dates for upcoming evaluations
• Write down due dates for readings/other ungraded assignments
• Write down work shifts that are already planned
• Write down planned extracurricular activities

2) Once you have done this (maybe you already have before class), look at
times where you might plan studying/working on your evaluations and
other assignments. Block of these periods.
• Try to start/identify a consistent routine, where you could use the same
times each week.
