Introduction:

• Candidiasis is a fungal infection caused by an


overgrowth of yeast (candida ) in your body .
• Candidia can overgrow and cause and
infection on skin .
Types:
1.Oral candidiasis:
• This is the most serious type of candidiasis
affecting mouth and throat.
• It is characterized by white patches on the
tongue ,inner cheeks and throat.
• It is usually treated with topical antifungal
medications such as clotrimazole .
2.Esophageal candidiasis :
• This type of candidiasis affects the
esophagus.
• It can cause difficulty swallowing and
chest pain.
• This is treated with oral antifungal
medications such as fluconazole .
3.Vaginal candidiasis:
• This is common type of yeast infection
that affects the vagina .
• It is characterized by itching , burning,
redness and a thick white discharge.
• It is treated with topical antifungal
medications such as clotrimazole or
miconazole.
4.Skin candidiasis :
• It can affect any part of the skin .
• But mostly moist areas such as
armpits , groin and under breast.
• It is usually treated with topical
antifungal medications such as
clotrimazole.
5.Invasive candidiasis:
• This is a serious type of candidiasis that can
spread to the bloodstream and other
organs.
• It is most common in people with
weakened immune system .
• It is usually treated with intravenous
antifungal medications such as
fluconazole. .
6.Nail candidiasis(onychomycosis):
• Symptoms are discoloration (yellow,brown,white
nails) ,thickened brittle nails, pain or swelling
around the nail bed.
• Risk factors are frequent handwashing or prolonged
exposure to water.
• Treatment includes topical antifungals e.g ciclopirex.
• Keep nails clean and dry.
7.Diaper candidiasis:
• Symptoms are red ,inflamed rash in
the diaper area , often with satellite
lesions .
• Risk factors are prolonged diaper use,
warm , moist environment.
• Treatment include topical
antifungals ,frequent diaper change.
Causes:
• Weakened immune system
• Antibiotic use
• Pregnancy
• Diabetes
• wearing tight-fitting cloths
Prevention:
• There are several things you can do to prevent candidiasis , including:
• Avoiding harsh soaps and detergents
• Eating a healthy diet
• Limiting your intake of sugary foods and drinks
• Practicing good hygiene
Symptoms:
• Itching
• Burning
• Redness
• Soreness
• White patches
• Thick white discharge
Diagnosis:

1.Physical examination:
A healthcare provider will
examine the effected area ,
looking for signs such as redness,
itching, white patches or unusual
discharge .
2.Culture:
A sample also be cultured in a
laboratory to grow the candida yeast
and confirm the diagnosis.
3. Sampling and microscopy :
A sample of the affected area may be
taken and examined under a microscopy
to identify the presence of candidia
yeast.
Treatment:
• Topical antifungals are used for skin or vaginal infections.For example
clotrimazole,miconazole.
• Oral antifungals are used for systemic infections.For example
fluconazole.
• Keep affected area dry ,wear breathable clothing and avoid irritants.
