LESSON 3:

FACILITIES, PARTS
OF FISH POND
AND THEIR
FUNCTIONS
FISH FARMING FACILITIES
•Hatcheries
Hatcheries are used for breeding and the early growth stages of fish. They provide a
controlled environment to maximize survival rates of fish fry (young fish).

•Grow-Out Ponds
These ponds are designated for rearing fish from juvenile to market size. Proper grow-out
ponds are critical for accommodating the increasing space needs as fish grow.

•Water Supply Systems

A reliable water supply is essential for maintaining optimal pond conditions. The water
system ensures that water is consistently refreshed, helping to control temperature and
oxygen levels.
FISH FARMING FACILITIES
Aeration Systems

Fish need oxygen to survive, and aeration systems are used to introduce oxygen into the
water. This equipment is vital in densely stocked ponds to prevent oxygen depletion, which
could be harmful to the fish.

Feeding Systems

Feeding systems automate the distribution of food, helping to ensure that all fish receive
adequate nutrition. Consistent feeding promotes uniform growth and helps maintain good
water quality by reducing food waste.
PARTS OF FISH POND AND
THEIR FUNCTION
•Inlet and Outlet Pipes

•Inlet Pipe: Provides a continuous supply of fresh water, helping control the pond's oxygen
and temperature levels.
•Outlet Pipe: Allows water to exit the pond, preventing overflow and helping to maintain a
balanced water level.

•Pond Bottom
The pond bottom supports fish and helps manage waste accumulation. Ideally, it should be
slightly sloped to allow easy drainage and efficient removal of sediment, which helps
maintain water quality.

•Drainage System
A well-designed drainage system is necessary to empty the pond when needed, such as for
harvesting or cleaning. Valves or gates control the water flow, allowing for partial or full
drainage as required.
PARTS OF FISH POND AND
THEIR FUNCTION
Dikes/Berms
These are the raised banks or walls around the pond that contain the water within the pond
area. They prevent erosion and provide stability to the pond’s structure.
Sluice Gate
The sluice gate regulates water flow into and out of the pond, allowing for controlled water
levels based on the needs of the fish.
Overflow
The overflow feature prevents water from spilling out of the pond, especially during heavy
rains. It is typically set at the water surface level to redirect excess water safely.
IMPORTANCE OF PROPER
POND SETUP
•Water Quality Maintenance: Essential for fish health and growth.

•Efficient Waste Removal: Prevents buildup of harmful substances.

•Oxygen and Nutrient Balance: Ensures that fish have access to vital resources.

•Flood Prevention: Protects the pond from overflow during heavy rain or high
water flow.
