Bikes through History

Bicycles are human-powered machines used for travel. The

design of them has changed greatly in their 200-year history.

Let's look at some of the major developments in bicycle

technology.

Did You Know…?

The word bicycle means 'two wheels'. Bi- means 'two' and
'cycle' comes from a word meaning 'circle'.
1817 – The Laufmaschine
(The Running Machine)
The first bike was propelled by the rider pushing along with
their feet.
It was nicknamed ‘The Dandy Charger’ and was also known as
a
‘hobby horse’.
1860s – The Velocipede
The velocipede was one of the first bicycles. It was driven by
using the pedals attached to the front wheel.

The rider pushed pedals which were connected by long rods to

the rear wheels.

These bicycles were also known as

‘boneshakers’ because they were so
uncomfortable to ride.
1869 – The Penny-Farthing
The penny-farthing was invented in 1869. It was also known as
an ‘ordinary’ and was popular in the 1870s.

It had wire spokes on the wheels and a

larger front wheel. The large wheel
reduced the shocks and bumps from
the road and helped the bike
travel faster.
1885 – The Safety Bicycle
The safety bicycle was the first bicycle to look similar to ones
that we use in modern day.

They were invented by John Kemp

Starley. They had a chain to drive
the rear wheel and a low seat and
later had tyres with air in them.
1960 – Mass-Produced
Racing Style Bikes
The racing bike style became very popular during the late
1960s and 1970s. Their frames were built from steel tubes,
which made them lighter than previous bicycles.
1980 – Mass-Produced
Mountain Bikes
Mountain bikes were developed for riding off the roads. They
feature knobbly tyres, stronger parts and suspension systems,
which make it easier to go over rough ground and bumps.

What do you think bikes of the future will look like?

What features would you like them to have? Why?

James Starley
James Starley was a British inventor, who was
often called the ‘father of bicycles’.

He started his career by making improvements to

sewing machines. However, after seeing his first
velocipede in 1868, he convinced his company
to start making bicycles that would be lighter
and easier for people to use.

One of his most famous inventions was the penny-farthing.

Did You Know…?

James Starley’s nephew was John Kemp Starley, the inventor of
the safety bike.
Annie Cohen Kopchovsky
Until the arrival of the safety bike in 1885, bicycles
were mostly only used by men.

Between 1894 and 1895, Annie Cohen

Kopchovsky became the first woman
to travel around the world with
a bike. She cycled as well as
travelling by train and boat.
Annie Cohen Kopchovsky

Annie began her journey in

Boston in the United States
and made her way to New York
and then Chicago. She then
returned to New York, where
she took a boat to France. Annie
then cycled and sailed to East
Asia, stopping in countries such
as Sri Lanka, China and Japan.
John Dunlop
John Dunlop was a Scottish man who invented the
pneumatic tyre
(a rubber tyre inflated with air).

originally invented to be used for
bicycles, they became very popular as
they were designed around the same
time as
the first cars.
Denise Mueller-Korenek
Denise Mueller-Korenek is an American
champion cyclist who has won many cycling
competitions.

In 2018, she became the fastest cyclist in

the
world when she broke the world record for
paced bicycle land speed.

To gain speed, she was towed by a

race car until she reached over
100 miles per hour. She then used
her own power and the draft of the
car to reach a speed of over
180 miles per hour.
Facts About Bikes
Riding and maintaining a bike costs around 20
1 times less per year than driving and
maintaining a car.

There are around 20 million bicycles in the

2 United Kingdom.

Cycling is proven to improve people’s mental

3 and physical health.
