Permutation

The document explains permutations, a mathematical technique for determining the number of arrangements in a set where order matters. It provides formulas for calculating permutations of n objects taken r at a time, along with examples and applications in various scenarios. Additionally, it discusses circular permutations and presents several problems for practice.

PERMUTATION
• Is a mathematical technique that
determines the number of positive
arrangement in a set when the order of the
arrangement matters.
Order is
important
FORMULA:
The permutation of n objects taken n at time
is given by:

nPn= n(n-1) (n-2) (n-3)

…..3.2.1.
Example:
1.5P5 = 5.4.3.2.1 = 120
2.6P6 = 6.5.4.3.2.1 =
720
3. In how many ways can four
pocketbooks be arranged on a
shelf?
Solution:
4.3.2.1 =
4P 4 =
24
4. Albert, Belinda and carol are
arranging themselves in a row for a
picture taking. In how many ways can
they position themselves?
• 3P3 =3.2.1 = 6

Albert, Belinda, Carol Albert,

Carol Belinda
Belinda, Carol, Albert Belinda,
Albert, Carol
Carol, Albert, Belinda Carol,
Another way to write this is by
factorial.
• Example:
1.5! = 5.4.3.2.1 = 120
2.8! = 8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1 =
40,320
3.9! = 9.8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1 =
362,880
Formula:
• The permutation of n objects taken r at a time is:
Example:
• 1. 9P4 9! = 9! = 9.8.7.6.5 = 9.8.7.6 = 3024
= (9-4) 5! 5!
10! = 10! =10. 9.8.7.6 = 10.9.8.7 =
2.10P4
= 5040
(10-4) 6! 6!
3.12P5 12! = 12! =12.11.10. 9.8.7 =
= 12.11.10.9.8 = 95,040
(12-5) 7! 7!
3. . An advertising executive has 6
commercials to use on a television show. If
one commercial will be shown for the
opening of the show, a second commercial
for the middle of the show, and the third one
for the ending of the show, how many
possible ways can this be accomplished.
• 6P3
6! = 6! = 6.5.4.3 =
6.5.4= 120
= (6-3) 3! 3!
4. From the digits 1,4,3 and 8, How many
three-digit whole numbers of different digits
can be formed.

4P3 =
4! = 4! = 4.3.2.1 = 4.3.2
= 24
(4-3) 1! 1!
Here are the numbers:
• 134 138 143 148 183 184
• 314 318 341 348 381 384
• 413 418 431 438 481 483
• 813 814 831 834 841 843

There are 24 three-digit whole numbers that can be

formed using the digits 1, 4, 3 and 8.
Six nurses and five doctors are
to arrange themselves in a row
for a picture taking. In how
many ways can this be done if no
two nurses are to stand beside
each other?
• The number of permutation of m
objects arranged in a circular manner
is
m or (m-1)!.
m
• When objects are arranged
in a circular manner, the
arrangement of objects is
called circular permutation.
Example:
• 1. If eight people are to occupy
eight seats around a circular table,
how many different arrangements
are possible?
2. In how many ways can five guests be
seated at a round table if two of the
guests must be seated next to each other?

* The two guests who want to be seated side by

side are counted as one. Hence, instead of having
5 guests to be arranged, there would only be 4.
Moreover, the two guests who want to be seated
side by side have 2! Ways of arranging themselves.
Hence, the number of arrangements or
permutation is

among themselves?
3. Two parents and their 3 children are going to
watch a cultural show. In how many ways can they
be seated in a row if the parents must not sit
beside each other?
4. Teacher Matilda wants to put 4 Grammar books,

that books of the same subject are put together.
5. How many four-letter arrangements
are possible from the letters T, U, E, S, D,
A, Y?
