Crop Production Management

The document discusses nutrient management in crop production, focusing on manure and fertilizers. Manure, an organic matter from decomposed animal and plant waste, improves soil structure and fertility, while fertilizers are inorganic substances that enhance soil fertility but can lead to pollution and reduced soil health if misused. The document also contrasts the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of manure and fertilizers.

MANURE
Manure is an organic matter containing small quantities
of
nutrients which is used to increase the yield in soil by
enriching
it.
• Manure is prepared by the decomposition of animal excreta
and
plant waste.
• The bulk of organic matter in manure helps in improvising
the
soil structure. This involves increasing the water holding
capacity in sandy soils and drainage and avoiding water
logging in
clayey soils.
Classification of Manure:
Based on the kind of biological material used, manure can be classified as:

COMPOST AND VERMI-COMPOST GREEN MANURE

a. The process in which farm waste
a. Prior to the sowing of the crop seeds,
material like livestock excreta (cow
some plants like sun hemp or guar are
dung, etc.), vegetable waste, animal
grown and then mulched by ploughing
refuse, domestic waste, sewage waste,
them into the soil.
straw, eradicated weeds, etc. is
decomposed in pits is known as
composting.

b. The compost is rich in organic matter

b. These green plants thus turn into green
and nutrients. Compost is also prepared
manure which helps enrich the soil in
by using earthworms to hasten the
nitrogen and phosphorus.
process of decomposition of plant and
animal refuse. This is called vermi-
compost
FERTILIZERS
FERTILIZERS
Inorganic chemical substances supplied to crops
are known as fertilizers.
Advantages
• Enhances the fertility of the soil by providing
primary nutrients
• Portable and easy to store
• Quick solution to increase the yield
Disadvantages
• Reduces soil fertility
• Causes water pollution
• Injurious to health
Fertilizers contain all the essential nutrients that
crops require to grow

• FERTILIZERS are commercially produced plant nutrients. They supply
nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. They are used to ensure good vegetative
growth along the leaves branches and flowers giving rise to healthy plants.

• Fertilizers should be applied carefully regarding proper dose, time, and

• observing pre and post-application precautions for their complete
utilization. For example, sometimes fertilizers get washed away due to
excessive irrigation and are not fully absorbed by the plants. This
excess fertilizer then leads to water pollution

• Also, continuous use of fertilizers in an area can destroy soil fertility

because the organic matter in the soil is not replenished and micro-organisms
in the soil are harmed by the fertilizers used.
