PERDEV-LESSON-3

The document discusses cognitive development in adolescence, highlighting the theories of Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget, who identified four stages of mental development. It outlines the periods of adolescence: early, middle, and late, each characterized by increasingly complex thinking processes. Additionally, it addresses sex differences in cognitive abilities, noting variations in language skills, empathy, and mathematical proficiency between genders.

GOOD DAY, 12-ABM!

Let’s learn a lot from each other

today.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
IN ADOLESCENCE
Lesson 3 - Personal Development
COGNITIVE
DEVELOPMENT
Cognitive development refers to
the progression of one’s ability to
think and reason out. Most of the
ideas about cognitive
development in adolescence
were extracted from the work of
the Swiss biologist and
psychologist Jean Piaget (1896-
1980).
JEAN PIAGET
Piaget was a Swiss psychologist who was the
first to make a systematic study of the
acquisition of understanding in children. He is
thought by many to have been the major
figure in 20th-century
developmental psychology. He identified four
stages of mental development that chronicled
young people's journeys from basic object

FOUR STAGES IN COGNITIVE
PERIODS OF ADOLESCENCE
EARLY ADOLESCENCE

(12-14 YEARS
OLD)
During this period, the
adolescent makes use of
more complex thinking in
personal decision making
within his/her immediate
environment, home and
school.
MIDDLE
ADOLESCENCE
(15-17 YEARS
OLD)

This stage marks the use by

the adolescent of more
complex thinking processes
to include more
philosophical and futuristic
concerns.
LATE ADOLESCENCE

(18-21 YEARS
OLD)

During this stage, the

adolescent makes use of
complex thinking processes
that are less self-centered.
SEX DIFFERENCES IN
COGNITIVE ABILITIES
• Women are adept in the use
of language or verbal ability
• Men excel in mentally
manipulating the objects that
they see
• Women tend to score higher
on measures of empathy and
emotional recognition,
• Men are often
overrepresented at the higher
end of mathematical
proficiency
