• Staffing is the process of obtaining and
maintaining competent employees to fulfill all
the required positions.
• It includes recruiting, selecting, appointing,
training, appraising, and maintaining
employees in the organization.
Objectives of staffing
• To select and appoint right person at right job.
• To develop strategy for effective utilization of
human resources.
• To introduce training, seminar, workshop etc for
employees.
• To motivate employees and maintain high
morale.
• To ensure equal opportunities to the employees
and develop good working environment.
Importance of staffing
• Manage effective staff
Staffing helps in managing effective staff by recruitment,
selection, placement and appointment of right person
at right job.
• Utilization of physical resources
Staffing helps in the utilization of all other physical
resources.
• Increase in productivity
It helps in the effective utilization of all resources which
promotes productivity.
• Focus on goal achievement
- It helps in ensuring right person at right job
along with efficient use of resources which
helps to fulfill goals of organization.

Manpower planning
• It is the first step of staffing function.
• It is the process of estimating manpower needs
and developing appropriate policies and
programs to fulfill the needs.
Recruitment
• It is the process of searching for prospective
employees and stimulating them to apply for jobs in
he organization.
• There are two sources of recruitment : internal and
external sources.
• Internal sources of recruitment are filling vacancies
through transfer and promotion of existing
employees.
• External sources of recruitment involve advertising,
manpower supplies etc.
Selection
• It is the process of choosing right candidate
from a pool of applicants.
• It leads to the employment of persons who
posses skill and ability to do the task.
Placement
• Placement is the process of providing
appointment and assigning specific jobs to the
selected employees.
Orientation
• Orientation is the process of introducing new
employees to the organization and its procedures,
rues and regulations.
• It is a socializing process of a new employee.
Training and development

• It refers too the improvement of specific skills,


abilities and knowledge of an employee.
Performance appraisal

• It is the assessment of an individuals


performance in a systematic way in terms of
requirement of job.
Transfer, promotion and demotion
Transfers involves the shifting of an employee
from one job to another of same level.
→Promotion is the advancement of n employee
to a higher position involving greater
responsibilities, better pay and higher status.
→Demotion is the downgrading of an employee
from higher level to lower level.
Characteristics of staffing
• It is concerned with managing people at work.
• It is concerned with developing the potentialities and
capabilities of employees.
• It is essential in all organization ( govt. military, non-
profit institution).
• It is continuous in nature as it remain active till the
organization is in existence.
• It is a social and dynamic process.
• It is an important component of management.
