Pre assessment
• What do you mean by habitat?
• What is adaptation?
• How do you think animals would
survive if they were moved to a
completely different habitat from the
one they are adapted to?
L.O:Able to use observations and reasoning to sort
animals into habitat groups based on their features and
adaptations.

What do you mean adaptation?

The process of change by which an

organism or species becomes better
suited to its environment.

adaptations.

List down as many names of different

animals you know.

adaptations.

Features of Terrestrial animals

• Legs for Movement
• Lungs for breathing
• Animals in cold region have Fur on their bodies
• Also they have fat under the skin to be used as food in
winter.
• Animals like snakes have scales that help them crawl
and protects them from drying.

animals into habitat groups based on their features and
adaptations.

Features of Terrestrial animals

• Skin of desert animals are thick and not very hairy
• Some animals like lizards & frog hibernate.

adaptations.

Hibernation (winter sleep)

• Some animals like lizards and frogs sleep
for several months to protect themselves
from the cold. This is called hibernation
• These animals eat a lot during summers
and store the extra food in their body as
fat.
• While the animal is hibernating, it
survives on the extra fat that is stored in
its body.

Aquatic Animals

Features of aquatic animals

• Gills to breathe ( Fish & crab)
• Dolphin and whale breathe through
lungs
• Fins for movement
• Webbed feet of duck and paddle like
flippers of turtle help them to move in
water

Reflection time

• Which animal did you find the most

interesting, and why?
• How do you think animals might
change if their habitat were destroyed?
• Can you think of an animal that could
live in both land and water? What
would its adaptations need to be?
• "If a camel were to live
in a rainforest instead
of a desert, what
challenges might it
face, and how would its
current adaptations
(like a hump for
storing fat and long
eyelashes) help or
hinder its survival in
that environment?"
Challenges camel would face-

1. High Humidity and Constant Rain:

The camel is adapted to survive in hot,
dry environments and would struggle
with the constant moisture of a
rainforest. Its thick fur might trap
moisture, leading to skin infections or
discomfort.
2. Abundant Food and Water:

•The camel's hump stores fat for energy during

food and water scarcity in the desert. In a rainforest
where food and water are plentiful, the hump may
no longer be necessary and could even become a
disadvantage by adding unnecessary weight.
3. Dense Vegetation and Narrow Paths:

•The camel's large size and long legs are suited

for open desert terrain, but these features could
make it difficult for the animal to navigate the
dense forests of a rainforest.
4. Predators and Camouflage:
• Camels rely less on camouflage in the
desert. In a rainforest with more
predators, the camel’s light-colored fur
would make it an easy target, as it
would not blend with the greenery.
• How the Camel’s Current Adaptations
Might Help:
1.Long Eyelashes and Nostrils That
Close:
1.These features protect camels from
desert sandstorms, but in a rainforest,
they might still help protect the animal
from insects or debris.
2.Ability to Go Without Water for Long
Periods:
1.While not as necessary in the rainforest,
• 1. Why do fish have gills instead of lungs?
• A. Gills help fish to breathe air from the water.
B. Gills help fish to filter food from the water.
C. Gills allow fish to absorb oxygen dissolved in
water.
D. Gills protect fish from predators.
• 2. Which of the following is the MOST
likely reason camels have long
eyelashes?
• A. To attract mates in the desert.
B. To protect their eyes from blowing sand
and dust.
C. To help them see better at night.
D. To make them look larger to predators.
• 3. Penguins live in cold aquatic
environments. Which of the following
adaptations helps them survive in such
habitats?
• A. Sharp teeth for eating plants.
B. A layer of fat (blubber) under their skin
for insulation.
C. Long legs for running away from
predators.
D. Big ears for better hearing.
• 4. Frogs are amphibians that live both
in water and on land. Which adaptation
helps them survive in both habitats?
• A. Their long tails for balance.
B. Their slimy skin for breathing and staying
moist.
C. Their sharp claws for climbing.
D. Their fur for warmth.
• 5. How does the streamlined body
shape of aquatic animals like dolphins
and sharks help them?
• A. It makes them look more dangerous to
predators.
B. It allows them to move easily through the
water with less resistance.
C. It helps them absorb sunlight better.
D. It keeps them warmer in cold water.
• 6. Why do desert animals like kangaroo
rats rarely drink water?
• A. They do not need water to survive.
B. They get enough water from their food
and conserve water through efficient
kidneys.
C. They store water in their tails like camels
store fat.
D. They only drink water during the rainy
season.
