Cottage Garden
FRENCH GARDENS:
• These gardens have similarities with Italian gardens.
• The present style i.e French style is due to the efforts of
“Lenotre”.
• He introduced many revolutions in the garden.He made
perfections to refind the French style.
• His main creations are “Garden at Versailles” which have
avenues which are memorable for their tremendous length &
width.its first master piece was the garden at Vaux-Le-
Vicomte for which he had removed 3 villages to create his
vista.
Moral of french garden style of Lenotre was to teach the
lesson “how to think big”
IMPORTANT FEATURES ARE:

• The gardens have an effect of spaciousness & simplicity


appears closely related to nature.
• Implimentation of scale on garden design.

PERSIAN GARDENS:
• It is one of the oldest style of gardening.
• Persian styles are based on their respective idea of
heaven.
• This style is strictly formal & symmetrical.
• Two types of garden

• Paradise garden
FEATURES OF PERSIAN GARDEN
• Crafted materials such as masonry, carved & pierced marble
stones & highly polished stones are used in these gardens.
• The gardens are laid out by cutting terraces on hill slopes.
• The main feature of Persian gardens are flowing
canals&Nahars of water.
• In concept of Persian gardens paradise is a place “where
cooling water flows.”
• Fruit trees represent “symbol of life”,while cyprus represent
symbol of “death and eternity”.

ITALIAN GARDENS
• These gardens came at the time of “reniaissance”.
• These gardens have similarities with Persian gardens.
• Here there is heavy use of massnary features.
• Italian gardens were formal, romantic gardens which
were dominated by architectural features, flower beds
& hedges which form an integral part of architecture.
• It is just an extension of Lavish palaces as a
glamarous outdoor hall for entertainment.
• The greatest benefit of Italian garden style brought to
gardening is that it thought the entire Europe
that-”Gardening could be the most respectable form
of art which demands thorough & carefull study of
gardens.”

 IMPORTANT FEATURES ARE:


• Fountains, sculptures, water canals, hedges, edges, topiary,
arbour, trellis, architecturally beautiful buildings,
• Stairs of marble,decorative urns.
• Most commonly used plants are:Cyprus, fruit trees & roses
Chinese Garden
• Absence of symmetry
• China is also considered as one of the first place
where plants were cultivated.
• They regarded garden as an art and form
• Features:

• Circle: Paradise
• Rich with native plants
• They follow constant flow between positive and
negative
• Rocks used to symbolize mountain best rocks eroded
limestone.

MoGHuL GARDENS:
• The gardens laid out during the rule of Moghul
emperors are known as Moghal gardens.
• Babar was the first ruler to introduce this style to
India.
• Pleasure garden
• Tomb garden
MAIN FEATURES OF MOGHAL GARDENS:
 Choice of sight:- Moghuls always preferred hill slopes with a
perennial rivulet or along the banks of the river.
 Design:-Rectangular or square shape were preferred.
 Walls & gates:-These gardens are invariably enclosed by high
walls,sculptured artistically & with an imposing wooden gates
at the enterance studded with bold iron nails &pointed with iron
spikes.Purpose of high walls was to get protection from hot
winds and enemies.
 Terraces:-As moghuls came from hilly terraces, they were fond
of terraces in garden even they also created artificially.
 7 represents “planet”, 8 represents “paradise”,& 12 represents
zodiac.
Ex:-Nishantbhag in Kashmir is built with 12 terraces.

 Running water:-The style of having running water was taken
from persian gardens.It was life of moghul gardens.T
• he water canals were paved with tiles/marbles of blue colour
to creat the illusion of depth.
• The water canals used to have fountains,which when
illuminated in the night created beautiful reflections.
• The fascination for water came from a Muslim faith which
says that,the “promised paradise is a place where cooling
water flows”.
 Tombs:-It was a common practice to have gardens built
around tombs.
 Ex:Taj Mahal at Agra,Akbars tomb at sikandra.
• Baradari:-It is an arbour like structure made up of masonary
& stones with a pakka roof & a raised platform for sitting
provided with 12 doors 3 on each side or on all sides for the
emperors to watch the performance of dancing girls.

 Garden is divided in to 3 parts:


• Rectangular, long & circular.
 Spring flowering trees : Safed kachnar, Beutia monosperma
Michelia champaka, chandan etc.
 Fragrant shrubs: Parijata, Harichampa etc.
 Annuals:Carnation, Narcissus, Daffodils etc.
