INTRODUCTION
Core-shell nanoparticles are a class of nanoparticles that consist of a core material
surrounded by a shell material.
The core and shell materials can be made of different materials, such as metals,
semiconductors, or polymers.
The unique properties of core-shell nanoparticles arise from the combination of the core
and shell materials, which can exhibit synergistic effects.
Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles have been extensively explored for their catalytic,
optical, and electrical properties. However, their bare surfaces often suffer from
aggregation, photodegradation, and reduced catalytic activity. To address these
limitations, embedding ZnO nanoparticles within a silica (SiO2) shell has emerged as a
promising strategy. The SiO2 shell not only stabilizes the ZnO core but also enhances its
catalytic activity and durability.
IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEM

The problem focuses on enhancing the catalytic activity of core-shell nanoparticles,

specifically zinc oxide (ZnO) embedded in silicon dioxide (SiO2). The challenge lies in
improving the efficiency and stability of these nanoparticles for various catalytic
applications, such as environmental pollution control and energy conversion. ZnO, while an
effective catalyst, often suffers from limitations such as poor stability, low catalytic activity
under standard conditions, and the tendency for surface deactivation. The incorporation of
photo-sonocatalytic processes (using light and ultrasound together) is proposed to enhance
the catalytic performance and increase efficiency.

PROPOSED METHODOLOGY

1. SYNTHESIS OF ZNO/SIO2 CORE-SHELL NANOPARTICLES

 Preparation of zno nanoparticles, zno nanoparticles are synthesized using the sol-
gel method by dissolving zinc acetate in ethanol and adding a suitable stabilizing
agent. The solution undergoes hydrolysis, followed by heat treatment to form zno.
 Coating with sio2 shell, the zno nanoparticles are coated with sio2 by adding
tetraethyl orthosilicate (teos) to the sol-gel mixture and adjusting the ph to promote
hydrolysis and condensation. The core-shell structure is formed by calcining the
particles at a suitable temperature.
2. CHARACTERIZATION OF CORE-SHELL NANOPARTICLES
 Structural characterization, XRD, SEM, and TEM are used to analyze the size,
morphology, and structural integrity of the zno/sio2 nanoparticles.
 Optical and surface properties, uv-vis spectroscopy and ftir are used to evaluate
the optical properties and surface characteristics of the particles.
3. CATALYTIC TESTING
 Photo-sonocatalytic activity, the catalytic activity of the zno/sio2 nanoparticles
will be tested in the degradation of organic pollutants (e.G., Dyes) under UV light
and ultrasonic irradiation. The performance will be evaluated by monitoring the
degradation rate over time using spectrophotometric analysis.
 Synergistic effect of photo-sonocatalysis, experiments will compare the catalytic
efficiency of zno/sio2 nanoparticles under uv light, ultrasonic waves, and
combined photo-sonocatalysis to determine the best method for enhancing
catalytic activity.
