A cam is a rotating machine element that provides reciprocating or oscillating motion to a follower, forming a higher pair with line contact. Cams are used in various applications, including IC engines and textile machinery, and can be classified based on input/output motion and follower shape. Different types of cams include radial, cylindrical, and end cams, while followers can be classified as knife edge, roller, flat faced, or spherical faced, and can follow radial or offset paths.

CAM

 A Cam is a rotating machine element

which gives reciprocating or oscillating
motion to another element known as
follower.

 The cam and follower have a line contact

and constitute a higher pair.
EXAMPLES FOR CAM
In IC engines to operate the inlet and exhaust
valves

Also the cams are used for operating paper cutting

machines, spinning and weaving textile
machineries, feed mechanism of automatic
lathes.

CLASSIFICATION OF FOLLOWERS

1. According to the shape of follower

1.Knife edge follower

2. Roller follower
3. Flat faced follower

4.Spherical faced follower

CLASSIFICATION OF FOLLOWERS
2. According to the path of motion of follower
1. Radial follower
When the motion of the follower is along an axis
passing through the center of the cam, it is known as
radial followers.
.

2. Offset follower

When the motion of the follower is along an axis

away from the axis of the cam center , it is called
off-set follower.
CLASSIFICATION OF CAMS

.
1.Radial or Disc Cam

In radial cams, the follower

reciprocates or oscillates in a direction
perpendicular to the cam axis.
.
2.Cylindrical Cam

In cylindrical cams, the follower

reciprocates or oscillates in a direction
parallel to the cams axis.
.
3.End Cams

It is also similar to cylindrical cams,

but the follower makes contact at
periphery of the cam as shown in
