SCIENCE

LESSON WHAT IS
1.1 SCIENCE?

 THE WORD SCIENCE COMES FROM

THE LATIN WORD SCIENTIA, TO
KNOW.

 it is a process of learning how

thing happen to work
WHEN DO YOU FIND
SCIENCE MEANINGFUL?
 Learning about science will give us
the ability to describe, explain,
and predict natural phenomena
as we ask or determine answers to
questions caused by our curiosity
in our everyday experiences.
We can develop technologies that
bring us the following advantages:
 1. It helps make our life easier.
 2. It helps us organize our daily activities.
 3. It helps make work done faster and
more efficient.
 4. It helps us communicate more easily
with others.
 5. It helps us know and understand other
cultures and societies.
The knowledge produced by science is
used in some technologies to create
products to serve our needs
TECHNOLOGY
 Comes from the Greek word
 TECHNE, which means”ART, CRAFT, OR
SKILL’’ and
 LOGIA ( WORD OR EXPRESSION.”)
 It defined as the application of science that
improves the quality of human life.
Technology brings about
innovation and
inventions that
package scientific
knowledge into practical
solutions to a specific
problem or need.
Now, where and when
do we start learning
science?
To answer that, let's picture ourselves in this
scenario.

Have you been to a supermarket or palengke to

buy food such as raw fish or meat, fruits and
vegetables?

Usually, when we are buying food items, we first

check for their appearance if they lock appealing
or if they have the same quality as those of the
other items found in the rack.
Although we seem to be just buying food, we are
Science process skills

Science process skills are the things that

scientists do when they study and
investigate

 Remember that science process skills

are used in scientific activities.
Science process skills
• Observing
• Inferencing
• Predicting
• Classifying
• Measuring
Observing- The five senses used to gather
information
Inferencing- it is an explanation of an event
based on our observation and experiences.
You interpret what you think about what you
see, hear, feel, and smell
Predicting- it states the outcome of a future events
based on a pattern of evidence
Classifying- It help us organize based on their
similarities and differences. We can also group them
according to their purpose or any other category
Measuring- It is way to collect compare, and interpret data
it is used in making your observations accurate
and exact.
Scientist always share common beliefs and
attitude about that they do and how they
understand their works
Important aspect of their personality that leads
to becoming successful in the field of science.

• Integrity
• Open-mindedness
• Critical thinking
• Collaboration
• Perseverance
Integrity-
the quality of being honest and having strong moral
principles

This attitude allows a scientist to recognize the work

done by other scientists and don't just take credit for
themselves.

This attitude is also shown by reporting data

truthfully, and they don't change them just to fit the
expected results.
Open-mindedness-
allows scientists to look at other
possibilities or outcome. They also try
to evaluate question or problem.
Likewise, we should also confirm, and
eventually accept other people's idea
toward a question or be open to
constructive criticisms as these are
necessary for improvement.
Critical thinking
is a kind of thinking in which you question, analyze,
interpret, evaluate and make a judgement about what you
read, hear, say, or write.
• critical thinking is at the heart of a scientific
investigation.

Curiosity
a strong desire to know or learn something.
Curiosity fuel one's passion for science, and all scientists
possess these traits. Scientists always ask questions
and wonder about the world. They may have random
questions at first, but they eventually deduce them into
more focused questions to answer. They then identify
Collaboration-
the action of working with someone to
produce or create something

science has always been a product of team

effort, and as they say, "Two minds are better
than one." There are many ways that teamwork
and collaboration can make science work better.
By working with other people, we can use our
own strengths to create the best discoveries and
innovations that we can have. It brings respect
and trust among scientists.
Perseverance- persistence in doing
something despite difficulty or delay in achieving
success.
The quest of discovering and innovating is never
easy. Most scientists persevere and not lose hope.

They are determined to continue and finish their

work despite many obstacles and failures
Failure means we have an opportunity to find a
new way to resolve the problem; sometimes, what
seems like a failure might be a solution to another
problem that we are not looking at.

Draw a device or an object in the box below that you think can help you solve or
ease your daily difficulties.

I think it is challenging/difficult__________________________________________________

Guide Questions:
1. What challenges/difficulties would your device be able to solve?
2. 2. How would this device function to help solve the problem?
