12th Lect-Y-7

The document outlines the objectives for Year 7 students to understand the differences between compounds and mixtures, specifically through the example of iron and sulfur. It explains that heating iron and sulfur forms the compound iron sulfide, while mixing them creates a mixture of two elements. Additionally, it discusses the composition of air as a variable mixture and describes mineral water as a solution containing dissolved minerals.

2 Materials and their Structure

2.7 Compounds and mixtures

Prepared by : Tr. Zaw

Year : 7
Date : 14.7.2023
Objectives

Students will able to:

1. Make a compound and mixture by using iron and sulfur

2. Compare the differences between compounds and mixtures

Getting started
• Which of these are elements and which are compounds?
nitrogen carbon dioxide calcium chloride sodium
O2 CaO CH4 H2O K

• What is the difference between an element and a compound?

Ans:

• Discuss with a partner and be prepared to share with the class.

Compound
• When iron and sulfur are heated together, iron atoms and sulfur atoms
bond together to form the compound iron sulfide.
Mixtures
• When you mix iron and sulfur together, you make a
mixture of two elements.

• In science, the word pure is used to describe

something that only contains a single substance.

• A mixture is not pure.

• It is made up of different kinds of particle that are

mixed together.

• The composition of air varies because the amount of

water vapour changes all the time, depending on the
weather.
• The amount of carbon dioxide and other gases also change.

• This can be a result of natural emissions.

The diagram shows some particles in
air. The red circles represent oxygen
atoms. The black circles represent
carbon atoms. The blue circles
represent nitrogen atoms. The white
circles represent hydrogen atoms.
1 Which is the most common element
in air?
Ans:

2 How many different kinds of substance are shown in the diagram?

Ans:
3 Which is the least common compound in this sample of air?
Ans:
Mineral water is a mixture
• The bottle contains a mixture of
water and other substances.
• The minerals are dissolved in the
water.
• The mineral water is a solution.
• A litre of water may have about of
minerals dissolved in it
