1. How to find & explain the dangling Modifiers
2. Correct The Dangling Modifier.
3. Doing Some exercises
How to Find the Dangling Modifier.
• Ask: Who or What Is Being Described?
• Determine what the modifier is describing. The subject
of the modifier should follow it for clarity.
• Check for Missing or Mismatched Subjects
• If the subject of the modifier isn't clearly stated or is not
the subject of the main clause, the modifier is dangling.
For example:
• Dangling: Running late, the meeting started without him.
• (Who was running late? The meeting can't run late—it's the person!)
• Fixed: Running late, he arrived after the meeting had
started.
How to Correct the Dangling Modifier
• 1. Identify the Dangling Modifier
• Look for a descriptive phrase (usually at the beginning of the
sentence) that doesn’t have a clear or logical subject in the main
clause.
• Example:
Running down the street, the backpack fell off.
(The phrase Running down the street doesn’t clearly specify who is
running.)
• 2. Add the Appropriate Subject
• Ensure the subject that the modifier describes is present in the
sentence.
• Fix:
Running down the street, I dropped my backpack.
(Now it’s clear that I am the one running.)
Continuation. | How to Correct the
Dangling Modifier
• 3. Attach the Modifier Directly to the Subject
• Rearrange the sentence so that the modifier
immediately precedes or follows the subject it
describes.
• Example:
To finish the project on time, extra effort was needed.
(Who needed the effort?)
• Fix:
To finish the project on time, the team put in extra
effort.
(The subject the team is now explicitly connected to the
modifier.)
