SM 225 / Mechanics of
Deformable Bodies
Module Number:
Lesson 8 - Statically
Indeterminate
Structures
Description:
 This module looks into the concept of
statically indeterminate structures and
thermal stress.

Objectives:
 At the end of this module, the learner
should be able to :
 Have a better understanding of concept of

structurally indeterminate structures.

 Solve problems relating axial deformation

and Structurally indeterminate structures.

 Statically Indeterminate Members

 There are certain combinations of axially

loaded members in which the equations of
static equilibrium are not sufficient for a
solution. This condition exists in structures
where the reactive forces or the internal
resisting forces over a cross section exceed the
number of independent equations of
equilibrium. Such cases are called statically
indeterminate and required the use of
additional relations which depend upon the
elastic deformation on the members.
Problems:
1. A steel bar 50 mm in diameter and 2m long is surrounded by a
shell of cast iron 5mm thick. Compute the load that will compress
the combined bar a total of 1mm in the length of 2m. For steel E =
200 GPa and for cast iron E = 100 GPa..

1. The lower ends of three bars shown are at the same level
before the rigid homogenous 20Mg block is attached. Each
steel bar has an area of 600mm2 and E = 200GN/m2. For the
bronze bar the area is 900 mm2 and E = 83 GN/m2. Find the
stress developed in each bar.

 After the block was attached, the rods were elongated or stretched due to the block.
 The block will remain horizontal because of symmetry.
 Elongation in steel is equal to elongation in bronze.
