Unit 2a

Hyperbolic functions
• Defining the hyperbolic function
• Hyperbolic as power series
• Evaluating hyperbolic fns, log forms and their inverse
• Hyperbolic trigonometric fun
Introduction
• The hyperbolic fn is defined as the trigonometric function of a complex number. i.e cosjx =
coshx, sinjx= sinhx, tanjx =tanhx
• Coshx is the hyperbolic cosine, sinhx is the hyperbolic sine etc, hence for each trig ratio there
is a corresponding hyperbolic fn.
• Knowing the relationship for complex number that it can be expressed in trigonometrical form
and exponential form:
cos(exponential form)
And
• Proof: Adding the equations
Putting jx=θ we get
, the hyperbolic cosine
Subtracting the equations give 2jsinθ= =-2sinθ when j removed ie multiply j or divide by j and
rationalize(this covered chapter 2)
Putting x=jθ gives -2sinθ = =-2sinjx=-2sinhx= =
s= , the hyperbolic sine
• From the trig identity tanx=
Hyperbolic functions in series form
• The exponential fn as a series

•=
•=
Evaluating hyperbolic functions
• Are evaluated in the same way we evaluate trig functions: use of scientific
calculator having these functions or the exponential function part.
Example 1. Evaluate sinh 1.275: Example 2 Evaluate tanh 1.27

• Or use calculator direct: press hyperbolic Enter hyperbolic fn followed by

tan
function key (hyp)followed by sin then enter then enter 1.27
1.275
Inverse hyperbolic function
• These represent functions of the form [the equivalent of sine( cosine( and
tan( in trigonometric functions]
Let =y i.e sinhy =x hence the problem is to find value of y whose sinh is x
• Example 3 find : Let =x i.e. sinhx=1.475. Find the value of x whose hyperbolic
sine is 1.475.
• From the sinh function
1.475.
Simplifying inverse using Natural log(ln) fn
• Consider find expression for : Task is to find y
Let =y sinhy=x, then
Solving the quadratic in

Then at this stage take ln both sides ln()=ln()

y= ln() and take positive results only in side the ln function
Hence ln()
Hyperbolic Identities 4. ()=1 , Divide by : gives

(a) pronounced co-sheck

1. Basic functions- are definitions =(

(b) pronounced sheck

5. ()=1 Divide by :

(c) pronounced coth 6. Cosh x+sinh x= and coshx-sinhx=

2. compare
with tanθ=)
3. Subtracting 4sinhxcoshx=
Cosh x+sinh x= and coshx-sinhx= 2sinhxcoshx=
(Cosh x+sinh x)(coshx-sinhx)= { the double angle formula equivalent}
()=1 • Adding
Equivalent trig [ =cosh2x
• Can replace the in (3)
Relationship between trig and hyperbolic functions
• From definition of complex no • Putting θ=jx in the 3 will give
cos cos
And Hence cos
• Adding 2cosθ= jsinθ=sinhjθ gives jsinjx=sinhj.jx=sinh(-x) will
give
Hence cos -sinhx gives sinhx
• Subtracting 2jsinθ= Summary

Hence jsinθ=sinhjθ
• Dividing
Hence jtanθ=tanhjθ

Proof: jsinh(x+y)=sinj(x+y)
Sinj(x+y)=sin(jx+jy)=sinjxcosjy+cosjxsi
njy=jsinhxcoshy+coshx . Jsinhx
• jsinh(x+y)= jsinhxcoshy+coshx .
