6.4 Circular Permutation

Circular permutation refers to the

permutation of object in a circular manner.

(n – 1)! Circular

(n – 1)! Bracelet/Key chain

Example
How many different ways can 5 people
be seated around a table?
Solution: n=5
(n – 1)! =(5 –
= 1)!
4!
= 24

24 circular permutations
Example
In how many ways can 3 girls and 3
boys sit around a circular table so that
boys and girls alternate?
Solution:
Ladies first:
The girls can be seated (3 – 1)! = 2! = 2 ways
The boys can have 6 ways or 3! sitting between the
girls.
So, we have 2 x 3= 6 ways of sitting 3 girls and 3
boys around a table so that the alternate.
Example
How many different bracelets with 6
distinct colored beads can you make?
Solution: n=6
(n – 1)! (6 – 1)!

5. At a dinner party, 4 men and 4 women sit at
a round table so that the sit alternately?
A. 16 C. 144
B. 36 D. 576

Solution:
Ladies first:
The girls can be seated (4 – 1)! = 3! = 6 ways
The boys can have 4! ways or 24 sitting between the
girls.
So, we have 6 x 24 = 144 ways of sitting 4 girls and
4 boys around a table so that the alternate.
6.3 HW

At a dinner party, 4 men and 4 women

sit alternately at a round table. In how many
ways can they sit of Alex and Helen must sit
next to each other?
6.3 HW solution
At a dinner party, 4 men and 4 women sit
alternately at a round table. In how many ways can
they sit of Alex and Helen must sit next to each other?
Since Allan & Jane are to be seated next to each other, we
have 3 boys + 3 girls + 1 pair = 7 person to be arrange in a
circular table, so we have (7 – 1)! or 6! arrangements.
Alex & Helen can have 2! ways be seated next to each other.
The remaining 3 boys will have 3! ways and for the 3 girls also
have 3! ways.
6! x 2! x 3! x 3! = 51,840 ways
