Securing and

testing seeds
Lesson Objective
• This lesson provides knowledge and
information on the importance of planting good
seeds and how to secure good seeds.
• It prepares the students with the necessary
knowledge on the proper procedures of testing
seeds.
Introduction

Testing the seeds before planting is

important in the management of
crops.
Seeds

A seed is a part that can grow

into a new plant. Most plants
reproduce by seeds.
Selection of
Seeds
We should always test seeds
to detect the seeds' viability
or ability to germinate.
Healthy and vigorous seeds
will produce good quality
crops and high yield.
Do you know how
to select good
seeds?
Characteristics of Good
Seeds
1. Varietal purity. Seeds must not contain seeds
of other varieties and weed seeds.
2. High percentage of live seeds that will
germinate. The seeds must be fully mature.
3. Plumpness and fullness of the seeds. They
must be in good size.
Characteristics of Good
Seeds

4. A Seeds must be free from pests and

diseases.
5. Seeds must be free from mechanical injury.
6. Suitability of seeds to local conditions.
Testing Seed Viability
This determines the seed quality and
establishes the rate of sowing at a given
stand of seedlings. High crop yield and
quality vegetables can be attained when
viable seeds are used in germination.
Methods of Testing Seed
Viability
1. Seed Box Method of Germination Trays

2. Rag Doll Method

Percentage of Germinating
Seeds

No. of seeds Germinated

Germination= x 100
No. of seeds Used
Example:
If I gave you 150 pechay seeds but only 102
of these seeds germinated, what is the
percentage of viability of those seeds?
Points to remember

• Testing seeds before planting is essential

to ensure that they will grow properly
Activity
Copy and answer on your notebook.
1. How do you think gardening can help us
take care of the environment?

2. What types of plants would you like to

grow, and why?
Activity
3. How can sharing a garden with friends or
family make the experience more fun?

4. What are some things you can do to

make your garden healthy and beautiful?

5. Why do we need to check on your seeds

everyday?
1. Testing seeds before planting is
essential to ensure that they will
grow properly.

2. Testing Seed Viability determines

the seed inequality and establishes
the rate of sowing at a given stand
of seedlings.
3. A Seeds must have pests and
diseases.

4. Plumpness and fullness of the

seeds. They must be in good size.

5. We shouldn’t test seeds viability or

ability to germinate.
1. If I gave you 60 okra seeds
but only 28 of these seeds
germinated, what is the
percentage of viability of those
seeds?
2. Teacher Patricia gave you
381 sunflower seeds but only
258 of these seeds germinated,
what is the percentage of
viability of those seeds?
3. What is the percentage of the
viability of seeds if Mr. Reyes
process 673 seeds but only 432
germinated?
4. What is the percentage of the
viability of seeds if Ms.
Ildefonso process 325 seeds but
only 254 germinated?
5. Mrs. Rosales gave Mr. Delos Santos
749 tomato seed but only 579 of
theses seed germinated, what is the
percentage of the viability of seeds
that Mr. Delos Santos process?
6. Mr. Alvarez gave Mrs. Cruz 820
sunflower seeds, but only 660 of
these seeds germinated. What is the
percentage of seed viability that Mrs.
Cruz achieved?
7. Ms. Tan provided Mr. Gomez with
950 corn seeds, and 780 of these
seeds successfully sprouted. What
percentage of these seeds were
viable for Mr. Gomez?
8. Mr. Torres handed Ms. Medina
1,200 pumpkin seeds, but only 940 of
them germinated. What is the
percentage viability of the seeds that
Ms. Medina received?
9. Ms. Lopez gave Mr. Santiago 670
bean seeds, and 540 of these seeds
germinated. What is the seed viability
percentage for Mr. Santiago?
10. Mr. Velasco provided Ms. Perez
with 500 pepper seeds, but only 420
of these seeds sprouted. What
percentage of the seeds given to Ms.
Perez were viable?
