Lecture#5-Introduction to ICT

The document discusses various methods of inputting data into computer systems beyond traditional mouse and keyboard, categorizing them into devices for hand, optical input devices, and audiovisual input devices. It details specific devices such as pens, touch screens, game controllers, barcode readers, image scanners, microphones, MIDI, and digital cameras, explaining their functions and applications. Additionally, it includes review questions to reinforce understanding of barcode reading and touch screen functionality.

INPUTTING DATA IN OTHER
WAYS
• Apart from inputting data with the primary devices, Mouse and
keyboard. Data can be inputted in other ways too
• There exist three major categories with which data/input can
be give to Systems
1. Devices for Hand
2. Optical Input Devices
3. Audiovisual Input Devices
DEVICES FOR THE HAND
• Pens
– Tablet PCs, PDA
– Also known as Stylus
– Pen used to write data
– Pen used as a pointer
– Handwriting recognition
is often tough with pen
writing.
DEVICES FOR THE HAND
• Touch screens
– Accept input by user’s fingertip.
– Sensors determine where finger points
– Sensors create an X,Y coordinate
– Usually presents a menu to users
– Touch Screens works well in dirty or
dusty environments where keyboards
might become useless.
– Found in cramped or dirty environments
DEVICES FOR THE HAND
• Game controllers
– Enhances gaming experience
– Provide custom input to the
game
– Comes in two broad categories
• Joystick
• Game pad : Flat device, provides
two sets of controls, one for each
hand
OPTICAL INPUT DEVICES
• Allows the computer to see input or take input in the form of light.
• Bar code readers
– BarCode: Patterns of printed bars that appear on product packages.
– Barcode readers: These devices emit a beam of light frequently a laser
beam, that is reflected by the bar code image.
– A detector inside the reader identifies the barcode image by identifying the
special bars at both ends of the image.
– Converts bar codes to numbers
– Computer finds number in a database
– Works by reflecting light
• Amount of reflected light indicates number
OPTICAL INPUT DEVICES
• Image scanners
– Converts printed media into electronic
– Reflects light off of the image
– Sensors read the intensity
– Filters determine color depths
– Barcode readers are a type of Image Scanners.
OPTICAL INPUT DEVICES
• Image Scanners and Optical character recognition (OCR)
– Converts scanned text into editable text
– Each letter is scanned
– Letters are compared to known letters
– Best match is entered into document
– Used in testing services
AUDIOVISUAL INPUT
DEVICES
• AudioVisual Input: Modern computers allows us to record
audio or video in our computer and use it for later use. For this
purpose we can use these devices:
• Microphones
– Used to record speech
– Speech recognition
• “Understands” human speech
• Allows dictation or control of computer
• Save audio using a microphone and a sound card
• Sound card is a special circuit inside a computer that converts our sound in
to audio signals (sound waves).
AUDIOVISUAL INPUT
DEVICES
• Musical Instrument Digital Interface
– MIDI
– Connects musical instruments to computer
– Digital recording or playback of music
– Musicians can produce professional results
AUDIOVISUAL INPUT
DEVICES
• Digital cameras
– Captures images electronically
– No film is needed
– Image is stored as a JPG file
– Memory cards store the images
– Used in a variety of professions
REVIEW QUESTIONS

1. Explain how a barcode reader reads a bar code and what it does with the
information from a barcode.
2. How touch screen systems work.
