Scope-and-Delimitation

The document outlines the necessity of establishing scope and delimitation in research to define boundaries and maintain focus on research goals. It differentiates between scope, which describes the coverage and parameters of the study, and delimitation, which specifies the chosen aspects and excludes others. Additionally, it clarifies the distinction between limitations, which are uncontrollable influences affecting the study, and delimitations, which are the researcher's defined parameters.

SCOPE AND

DELIMITATION
NECESSITY OF SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

• All forms and types of research undertakings MUST have boundaries.

• No study can be perpetual or exist infinitely in time.
• Such is the reason why every researcher, even before he/she decides to embark
on an investigation, must already plan and lay down the coverage or scope of
his/her study, as well as indicate the limits wherein which he/she will work on.
• Doing so will keep the researcher from STRAYING or moving away from his
research goal which can be: 1) solve a problem, 2) fill a gap, and 3) improve a
situation.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY

•The Scope of study in a research paper is the explanation

of the coverage or what information or subject is being
analyzed.
•It may also refer to how far the research area has explored
the parameters wherein which the study will be operating in.
•In addition, the type of information to be included in the
research project, the facts and theories to be cited, ALL from
part of the study’s scope.
DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

•The delimitation of study is the detailed description

of the scope of study. It will explain why definite
aspects of a subject were chosen and why others
were excluded.
•It will also mention the research method to be used
as well as the certain theories that will be applied to
the data analysis.
SCOPE VS LIMITATIONS
The Scope of the study involves any or all of the following factors:
 The coverage of the study to be undertaken;
 A detailed description of the project and product to developed;
 The experiences of experts with similar projects to help include or exclude
requirements;
 The different choices available to achieve a particular requirement;
 The provision of a systematic approach for setting criteria, such as
schedule, budget resources;
 The tools and techniques to be used in data analysis, decision making and
judgment formulation.
SCOPE VS LIMITATIONS
• The Limitations, on the other hand, are the influences that are
beyond the researcher’s control. They may involve
shortcomings, conditions and influences that restrict the study’s
methodology and conclusions.
• Limitation identifies potential weaknesses of a research while
delimitation addresses how a study will be narrowed in scope or
how it is bounded.
LIMITATIONS VS DELIMITATIONS
• Limitations are circumstances, conditions and influences that a researcher
cannot control nor clearly establish.
• These circumstances, conditions and influences are place pressure and
restrictions that may influence the methodology being used and eventually the
conclusion.
• The ideal statement to make in the limitations of a study is thoroughly
discussing the possible sources of weakness such as the following: (a) the
analysis; (b) the conditions and nature of data and information being gathered;
(c) the reporting system or survey being applied; (d) the sample and population;
size, demography, etc.; and, (e) the time constraints.
LIMITATIONS VS DELIMITATIONS
•Delimitations, on the other hand, are the choices a researcher has that
should be mentioned.
•Delimitations define and clarify the parameters of the research study in terms
of (a) population/sample; (b) treatment and utilization of data and information
gathered; (c) time and place of study; and, (d) instrumentation and process of
data gathering. These are the boundaries that should be set for the study; simply
said, the scope of the study.
LIMITATIONS VS DELIMITATIONS
•Delimitation also emphasizes on:
1) the activities that will not be done;
2) the literature that will not be reviewed;
3) the segment of the population that will be excluded; and,
4) the methodological procedure that will not be
followed.
LIMITATIONS VS DELIMITATIONS

• Delimitations, like limitations, should also be identified and explained

thoroughly.

• Note: The vagueness that normally results from inefficiently explained scope of
a research or study can be clarified with well-identified and well-explained
limitations and delimitations.
INDEPENDENT ASSESSMENT 1

• Analyze the given research problems. Choose one and INDICATE your workable SCOPE and
Delimitation of the Study.
