Laboratory Safety Guidelines

•PREPARING FOR LABORATORY


WORK:
-need to prepare a workplan.
-take note of chemicals, materials, type
of data and information needed for the
experiment.
-know the safety precautions to take
when doing an experiment
Work plan / Pre – Lab Report:
Laboratory Safety Guidelines
•Prescribed Personnel Protective
Equipment (PPE)
-Laboratory safety goggles
-Closed shoes
-Laboratory gowns
-Protective facemask
Safety Rules in laboratory
Immediately report to your laboratory
instructor;
-any major spills, breakages or accidents
in the laboratory.
-all physical injuries sustained in the
laboratory, no matter how trivial they
may seem.
-all “near miss” incidents in the
laboratory.
Safety Rules in laboratory
To help prevent laboratory incidents, you
should observe the following safety rules;
1. Wear the prescribed PPE
2. Keep food and drinks OUT of the Lab.
3. No smoking
4. Never work alone
5. Do not perform unauthorized
experiments.

6. Never remove chemicals from
laboratory and stockroom.
7. No Loitering in the Laboratory
8. Do not leave an ongoing Experiments
9. Read the Labels

10. Handle all chemicals with extreme
cautions.
11. Be orderly and dispose of the
laboratory wastes properly.
Cleanliness in the Laboratory
1. Avoid doing anything that will lead to
the contamination of reagents.
2. Practice the habit of rinsing droppers
and rods immeadiately.
3. Refrain from accumulating dirty
glasswares.
4. Always wash or wipe off dirt from
reagent bottles.
Cleanliness in the Laboratory
5. Clean up spills immediately.
6. Wash your hands thoroughly before
leaving the laboratory and dry them
on a clean towel.

Proper waste disposal:


-Inorganic
-Organic
Fire Safety
1. Small incidents of fire, can be
extinguished by inverting a small
beaker or any other similar
equipments.
2. Remove any flammable material such
as reagent bottles with flammable
chemicals from area of fire.
3. In case of person inhaling smoke or
toxic fumes, transfer him/her to a well
ventilated area.
