Introduction to Cycles (5)

The document outlines the components of Earth as a closed system, including the biosphere, lithosphere, and hydrosphere. It explains the conditions that allow life to exist on Earth, emphasizing the recycling of elements in natural ecosystems. Additionally, it describes the atmosphere's layers and their characteristics, as well as the significance of Earth's unique biosphere.

LIFE ON
EARTH
1. “Habitable Zone” – Earth’s
orbit keeps us close enough
to the sun that water is
liquid over most the planet,
but far enough that the
temperature is liveable
2. Ocean tides made conditions
for water-based life forms to
adjust to living on land
3. Events in history- meteor
strikes and dramatic
geological events allowed
for species to evolve
WE RECYCLE AT
HOME: WHAT ABOUT
IN NATURE?

• The idea of recycling comes from

nature.
• Oxygen, nitrogen, carbon and other
elements in the environment cannot
be manufactured from nothing.
• In natural ecosystems, these
elements are recycled, forming part
of different compounds at different
times.
EARTH IS THE ONLY
PLANET ON WHICH LIFE
IS KNOWN TO EXIST

• It consists of three components

Lithosphere/Geosphere (Land),
Hydrosphere (Water) and
Atmosphere (Air).
• The life supporting zone of the earth
where atmosphere, hydrosphere and
lithosphere meet, interact and make
life possible, is known as biosphere.
DRAW
THIS…….
Biosphere:
• The biosphere is composed of all living things on Earth.
Plants, animals, and one-celled organisms (unicellular) are all part
of the biosphere.
Most of the planet's life is found from three metres below the
ground to thirty metres above it and in the top 200 metres of the
oceans and seas.
Atmosphere:
The atmosphere is the body of
air which surrounds our planet.
Most of our atmosphere is
located close to the earth's
surface where it is most dense.
The air of our planet is 78%
nitrogen and just under 21%
oxygen; the small amount
remaining is composed of carbon
dioxide and other gases.
Troposphere (lowest layer – where we live)
- Most weather occurs in this layer
- Temperature decreases with height
- Energy from the Sun is absorbed by land & water and
re-radiated back into the atmosphere

Tropospheric ozone is bad ozone (CFC’s pollutants)

Ozone
Stratospheric ozone is good ozone (O3)
Stratosphere
- Ozone (O3) layer
- Absorbs most of the damaging ultraviolet sunlight (UV-B) so
temperature increases with height
- Polar stratospheric clouds form near the poles in winter
where chemical reactions occur that appear to destroy ozone.
•Mesosphere
- Very thin air so weather balloons and planes cannot
operate in this layer
- Gases in this layer absorb very little UV radiation
- Gases are thick enough to slow down meteorites and
they burn up

• Thermosphere
- UV & X-ray radiation from the Sun is absorbed so
temperature increases
- Very few molecules (thin air) so we do not feel the
heat
• Lithosphere (aka Geosphere)
• The lithosphere is the land masses of Earth. It covers the entire
surface of the earth from the top of Mount Everest to the bottom of
the Mariana Trench.
Hydrosphere
The hydrosphere is
composed of all of the
water on or near the
Earth.
Including the oceans,
rivers, lakes, and even
the moisture in the air.
Ninety-seven percent of
the Earth's water is in
the oceans.
The remaining three
percent is fresh water;
three-quarters of the
fresh water is solid and
exists in ice sheets
