GOOD PERSONNEL SAFETY PRACTICES

1
Feb 10, 2025
WHY ?

- to protect from workplace hazards

- help avoid injuries, illnesses and incidents

- minimize or eliminate safety and health risks

WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT?
- a program consist of all steps necessary to protect
workers from exposure to a hazard

- the training and the procedures required to monitor

worker exposure and their health to hazards such as
chemicals, materials or substance, or other types of
hazards such as noise and vibration
Four fundamental principles underlie
all the work practices
 Plan ahead

 Minimize exposure to chemicals

 Do not underestimate hazards or risks

 Be prepared for accidents

OSHA REGULATION 1970

Occupational Safety and Health Act, 1970

-OSHA is part of the United States Department of

Labor

to assure safe and healthful working

conditions for workers by setting and enforcing
standards and by providing training, outreach,
education and assistance
Hierarchy of hazard controls
- is a system used to minimize or eliminate exposure to hazards

HAZARD CONTROL - ENGINEERING
are strategies designed to protect workers from
hazardous conditions by placing a barrier between the
worker and the hazard

 or by removing a hazardous substance through air

ventilation

involve a physical change to the workplace itself,

rather than relying on workers' behavior or requiring
workers to wear protective clothing

HAZARD CONTROL - ENGINEERING
Enclosure
-place the material or process in a closed system (for noisy
equipment)
Isolation
-reduce or remove hazards by separation in time or space
Transportaion/ Redirect
-move hazardous materials where fewer workers are present
Redesign/Gaurding/Shielding the workplace
- redesign of workstation to minimize ergonomic injuries. Install
guards to provide protection from moving parts or electrical
connections. Shielding provides protection from potential
explosions
 Ventilation
-Use fume hoods, fans, air ducts and air filters

HAZARD CONTROL - ADMINISTRATIVE
No physical changes
Limits daily exposure to hazards by
-adjusting work tasks

Standard Operating Procedures and checklists

Training
Conducting a Job Hazard Analysis prior to the start of an
experiment
Limiting the time a person works with a certain
material
Mandating that no one should work in the lab alone

ADMINISTRATIVE CONTROLS - EXAMPLES

11
Feb 10, 2025
HAZARD CONTROL - PPE

- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

- used when hazards cannot be eliminated through

engineering or administrative controls

-a must, one should understand PPE necessary for their

protection

-Eye goggles, hearing protection, and protective clothing

(e.g., lab coats and gloves) are the most recognizable and
most used PPE in the lab

ROLE OF PPE
Even where engineering controls and safe systems of
work have been applied, some hazards might remain

These include injuries to:

the lungs, eg. from breathing in contaminated air

the head and feet, eg. from falling materials
the eyes, eg. from flying particles or splashes of
corrosive liquids
the skin, eg. from contact with corrosive materials
the body, eg. from extremes of heat or cold

PPE is needed in these cases to reduce the risk 13

TYPES OF PPE
Hazards Options

Eyes Chemical splash, dust, gas and Safety spectacles,

vapour, radiation goggles, face screens,
faceshields
Head and Impact from falling or flying Industrial safety
neck objects, risk of head bumping, helmets, bump caps,
hair getting tangled in hairnets and
machinery, chemical drips or firefighters' helmets
splash, climate or temperature

Ears Noise – a combination of sound Earplugs, earmuffs

level and duration of exposure,
very high-level sounds are a
hazard even with short duration

14

Hands and Abrasion, temperature extremes, Gloves, gloves with a
arms cuts and punctures, impact, cuff, and sleeving that
chemicals, electric shock, covers part or all of
radiation, vibration, biological the arm
agents and prolonged immersion
in water

Lungs Oxygen-deficient atmospheres, Respiratory

dusts, gases and vapours protective equipment
(RPE)
Whole Heat, chemical splash, spray Conventional or
body from pressure leaks or spray disposable overalls,
guns, contaminated dust, impact boiler suits, aprons,
or penetration, excessive wear or chemical suits
entanglement of own clothing

WAYS TO CONTROL THE SPREAD OF
RESISTANT BACTERIA OR ORGANISMS

 Wash your hands. Soap and water are effective. Wash for at least
15 seconds and use a good hand washing technique.
 Follow other good hygiene practices such as coughing or sneezing
into a tissue, and not touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
 Keep your vaccinations up to date.
 Clean shared surfaces, such as utensils, books, tables, doorknobs,
etc. Soap and water are effective when cleaning.
 Store, handle, and prepare food safely. Follow good food and
kitchen hygiene practices.
 If you vomit or have diarrhea, wash your hands and clean the
washroom. Do not handle food if you are ill.

EMERGENCY PLANNING
Emergency Eyewash and Safety Showers -include these units in
your preventive maintenance program.

Emergency Drills - Practice the elements of your emergency

action plan by conducting regular fire and/or natural disasters
drills. Ensure that employees know how to evacuate buildings,
where to take shelter.

Emergency Contacts - Post emergency

numbers at bulletin boards and
update the list regularly.
