INTRODUCTION

The government of India has


launched the national mental
health programme ( NMHP) in
1982, keeping in view of
heavy burden of mental
illness in the community.
DEFINITION

 National
mental health programme is a
modern scientific knowledge can help to
prevent and treat disabling mental illness.
 Mental health skill can be used to improve the
quality of general health science.
COMPONENTS

 The components of this sub-programme


includes treatment of epileptic and
psychotic at the community level and
development of rehabilitation centre at
both the district and high referral
centres.
PREVENTION


The components is to be community
based with initial focus on prevention
and control of alcohol related problems.
 Later on problems problems like
addiction juvenile deliquency and acute
adjustment problems like suicidal
attempt are to be addressed.
AIMS OF THE NMHP

 Prevention and treatment of mental and


neurological disorder and their associate
disabilities.
 Use of mental health technology to
improve general health services.
 Application of mental health principles to
total national development to improve
quality of life.
OBJECTIVES OF THE NMHP

 To ensure availability and sscbility of minimal


mental health care for all in the possible.
 To encourage application of mental health
knowledge in general healthcare and in social
development.
 To promote community participation in in the
mental health service development and to
stimulate efforts towards self help in the
community.
 To ensure the availability and accessibility of
minimum mental health care for all in the
possible future.
 To provide mental health care facility to every
individual of specified population and
specifically to those who are in need of it.
 To enhance human resources in mental health
specialities.
 To encourage the application of mental health
knowledge in general healthcare and in social
development.
STRATEGIES OF NMHP

 Integration mental health with primary health


care through the NMHP.
 Provision of tertiary care institutions for
treatment of mental disorders.
 Eradicating stigmatization of mentally ill
patients and protecting their rights through
regulatory institutions like Central mental
health authority,state of mental health
authority.
SPECIFIC
APPROACHES
 Diffusion of mental health skills to the
periphery of health services.
 Appropriate appointment of task.
 Equitable and balanced distribution of
resources.
 Integration of basic mental health care with
general health services.
 Linkage with community development.
NURSES ROLE IN NMHP

 Understand the characteristics of mentally healthy person


and abnormal form normal behaviour in the community
 Identified refer follow up the mentally ill person in the
community.
 Provide first aid during emergencies.
 Assist and coordinate the activities related to care of
mentally ill in the community health centre.
 Conduct mental health education to patient and their
family members.
 Providing training to health worker in
mental health care.
 Supervision and monitor the activities of
health worker related mental health care.
 Participate in various therapies used in
treating psychiatric patient.
 Assist medical officer and co-ordinate the
progress activity related to NMHP.
