Road Transportation
Advantages
• Give maximum flexibility of service from origin to destination.
• Apart from road vehicles, pedestrians also make use of facilities of the road
system.
• Door to door service.
• Low capital investment.
• Wide geographical coverage.
• Quick and assured deliveries.
• Economic and safety.
• High employment potential.
• Personalized travel and service for short hand.
Disadvantages
• Land coverage.
• Environmental pollution.
• Economy for long haulage.
• Parking
• Energy consumption
• Safety is poor
Rail Transportation
• More advantageous for long haul distances.
• Can transport large number of passengers and large quantity of goods
at a time.
• The railway tracks serve as arteries for transportation.
• The energy required to haul unit load through unit distance by the
railway is only a 1/4th to 1/6th of that required by the road transport.
• The transportation to and from rail stations are to be performed by
road transportation.
Water Transportation
• Energy efficient but slow.
• The rail and road transport serve as feeder system to transport goods
and passengers to and from the harbour’s and port.
• Inland water transportation is made possible along the rivers, canals
and lakes by boat and ferry service.
• Water is needed to operate the ships and boats on sea routes
between the harbour’s and ports.
Air Transportation
• Fastest modes of transportation.
• Allows continuous journey over inaccessible places.
• Expensive, consume more energy and affected by weather condition.
• The travel to and form the airports are to be performed by other
modes of transportation.
Note: 90%-92% of transportation is
covered by roads and highways,
7%-8% by airports and 1% by
waterways, ropeways and railways.
