Lec-4(b) - Hydrostatics Examples

The document provides examples of hydrostatic calculations involving circular and rectangular plates submerged in water. It includes detailed solutions for determining hydrostatic forces and centers of pressure for various configurations and depths. Additionally, it references textbooks for further reading on fluid mechanics and hydraulics.

Fluid Mechanics – I

Hydrostatics
(Examples)

Muhammad Saqib Khan

I about
base

The center of gravity (G) and moment of inertia (I) of some

important geometrical figures.
Example - 2
A circular lid encloses a pipe of of 2m diameter in the
ocean at 3m depth. The pipe is laid horizontally. Find the
hydrostatic force experienced by the lid and the centre of
pressure on the lid. Seawater is 1.04 times heavier than
fresh water. What will be the change in your results if the
same arrangement is applied in a freshwater lake ? Explain
Example – 2 (Soln.)
Given
d = 2m , x̄ = 3m , s = 1.04
To Find
(i) F = ? , (ii) h̅ = ?

𝛾s.w = 𝛾w x s = 9.81x1.04 = 10.203kN/m3

A = 𝜋/4(d)2 = 𝜋/4(2)2 =
3.142m2

F = 𝛾Ax̄ = 10.203 x 3.142x3 = 96.16kN

Example – 2 (Soln.)
Ic = 𝜋/64(d)4 = 𝜋/64(2)4 =
0.785m4

= [0.785 / (3.142)(3)] + 3

h̅ = 3.08m
Example - 3

A rectangular plate 2m wide and 3m high is

immersed vertically in water. Determine the
hydrostatic force and centre of pressure on the plate
when its upper edge is horizontal and 3.5m below
the free surface.

Hint : draw figure before solving the problem.

A = 6m2 , x̄ = 5m , F = 294.3kN , Ic = 4.5m4 , h̅ = 5.15m

Example - 4
A rectangular plate 2m x 4m is immersed in water in such a
way that its plane make an angle of 250 with the water surface
as shown in the figure determine (i) the resultant force on the
top of the plate due to water (ii) the difference in height of
centre of pressure and the centeroid. (iii)Is there any changes
in your result if the plate is twisted 650 clockwise, i.e., become
vertical in such a way that its CG remains at the same depth?
Example – 4 (Soln.)
Given
θ = 250 , b= 2m , h = 4m
To Find
(i) F = ? , (ii) h̅ - x̄ = ?

A = 2x4 = 8m2

x̄ = 1.8 + (4/2)sin 250 = 2.645m

F = 𝛾Ax̄ = 9.81 x 8 x 2.645 = 207.6kN

Example – 4 (Soln.)
Ic = bh3/12 = (2)(4) 3/12 = 10.667m4

= [10.667 sin2(25) / (8)(2.645)] + 2.645

h̅ = 2.738m

h̅ - x̄ = 2.738 - 2.645 = 9.3cm

Hydrostatic force remains the while the centre of pressure

shifts downwards.
Example - 5
A circular plate of 2m diameter is submerged in water as
shown in the figure. The greatest and least depth of the
plate are 2m and 1m respectively. Find the resultant
hydrostatic force and the position of centre of pressure
on the plate with respect to the free surface

A = 3.142m2

x̄ = 1.5m
F = 46.23kN

θ = 300
Ic = 0.785m4
