Diode – Clamped Multi-level Inverter
BRIEF IDEA-

An m-level DCMLI consists of

m-1 capacitors on the dc bus
2(m-1) switching devices
(m-1)(m-2) clamping diodes
m-level output phase-leg voltage
(2m-1) –level output line voltage

Pros and Cons(DCMLI)

Pros Cons

 More number of voltage  More levels  More

levels lesser harmonic clamping diodes
content
 High Inverter efficiency
 Control method is simple

8
Flying- Capacitor MLI
Ladder structure of dc side capacitors
An m-level FCMLI has
m-levels of phase voltage
2m-1 levels of line voltage
m-1 capacitors

Pros and Cons(FCMLI)
Advantages Limitations
 Phase redundancies are  Precharging all the capacitors
available for balancing the to the same voltage level is
voltage levels of the capacitor. difficult.

 Large number of capacitors  More number of capacitors

enables it to work in the case of more expensive and bulky
short duration outages and deep circuit.
voltage sags.

CASCADED MULTILEVEL INVERTER

Consists of a series of H-bridges

Uses separate dc sources for each
H-bridges
Output phase voltage level =m
Where m=2Ns+1
Where Ns=number of voltage
sources

Merits and Limitations(CMLI)

merits limitations
 compared to DCMLI and Requirements of separate
FCMLI it requires less dc sources limits its uses

achieve same number of
voltage levels

Reduced switching losses

and device stresses

14
FUTURE WORK
A suggestion for future research concerns the
unified approach switching scheme.

Another suggestion is to implement the multi-

level inverter with unequal dc sources.

15
Conclusion
This chapter has demonstrated the fundamental multilevel
inverter structures and including the pros and cons .

 This presentation has covered the basic ideas of the

multilevel inverter.

Emerging as a new breed of power converters for high-voltage

high-power applications.
