LESSON 5

Kitchen layout and design

By: Hannah Kirsten R.

Basic kitchen layout

Kitchen Layout is more than a layout of your

kitchen. It is a blueprint on how your kitchen will
function in general.
Main parts of the kitchen
1. The food storage station - Your refrigerator and pantry are the major
items here. Cabinetry adds function and convenience. Options like wine
racks, spice racks, and roll-out trays help to organize your groceries.

2. The preparation/cooking station - Your range (cooking stove),

microwave oven, and smaller appliances are found in this area. Counter
space is important in this section.

3. The cleanup station - This area is home to the sink, waste disposal, and
dishwasher.
Work Centers - focused around major appliances -refrigerator-freezer,
range, or sink.
These centers make possible an orderly flow of activities connected with
food storage,
preparation, çooking serving, and clean-up.
Work Flow - where work is done most efficiently when it flows in a
natural progression,
either from left to right or right to left.
Work Simplification - means doing the job in the easiest, simplest and
quickest way.
Work Station – simply means a specific work area where a particular
kind of food is
produced or a specific job is done.
Work Triangle - an imaginary line drawn from each of the three primary
work stations in the
kitchen, and avoid traffic flow problems.
Kitchen Shapes

1. Single-line Kitchen - this kitchen layout is a good

solution for narrow kitchens. This is not the most efficient, however,
as the user must walk from one end to the other many times in order
to prepare a meal; but it does contain everything needed in a small
and narrow space. If the sink is in the center of the longest wall, it
can eliminate some of the inefficiency.

Kitchen Shapes

2. L-Shaped Kitchen - This layout plan is nice for a kitchen

where a lot of entertaining might be done. This shape allows room
for tables and chairs at one end, and eliminates traffic. This shape is
also nice if you do not have a separate dining room and an eat-in
kitchen.

3. U-Shaped Kitchen - This layout is perfect for kitchen that

will get a lot of use and needs a great deal of space. This shape is
ideal for a large family or for people who take their food preparation
very seriously.

4. Galley Kitchen - The galley kitchen is a good efficient use

of space, and is one that many professional chefs tend to prefer.
Though the space is small, the appliances and preparation areas
are close together, which can decrease food preparation time.
A galley kitchen has two rows, but is usually not open at both ends.

5. Island Kitchen - This layout plan will

feature an independent island that
can face the living room or dining
area, allowing socialization between
the rooms. Some homeowners will
put the cook top in the island, with
a canopy over it, which then serves
as a focal point to the room.
