The land forms

Physical features on Earth’s

surface (shape, size)
Mountain
A landform that rises high above the Earth’s surface.
(the highest part of the land).
Hill
Lower in Hight than
mountains
Valley
Low land between hills or
mountains
Canyon
● Deep valley with high
steep sides
Plain

●A wide,
flat area
Plateau
● A flat land that
is higher than
the land around it
Desert

Area with very

little
precipitation.
Dune

●Mound of
sand
Beach
●The land along
the edge of a
body of water
Ocean
●A large body
of saltwater
Coast
Where a body of
water meets
land.

A continent
a Large landmass
The continent shelf (the ocean floor) is covered by
shallow water and gradually slopes down
continental slope the point where a sharp download
slope begins(this land is the steeper part)
At the base of the continental slope is the continental rise
that connects the continent with the ocean floor
An abyssal plain is a very flat area of the deep
ocean floor (covering about 60% of the earth’s
surface
Long mountains stretch through the middle of some
oceans these mountains are called mid-oceans-ridges

The valley down the center of a mid-ocean ridge is called a rift valley.
Trenches are the deepest part of the ocean
floor they are usually long and narrow
A seamount is an underwater that rises from the
ocean floor but stops before it reaches the

Map Earths features(16)
They are many different types of
maps

Physical maps Topographic map

The physical maps show the
features of the earth’s land
water mountains, dessert,
and plains

Some physical maps

use lines or shading to
represent changes in
elevation (the height
of the land above sea
level)
A map that uses
shading to show
elevations is
called a relief map
A topographic map
(shows the elevation
of an area using a
line, each line is
labeled with a
number)

Relief Map Topographic Map

Uses shading and lines to show elevations. Uses Contour lines only to show
elevations.

Earth has an outer layer of solid rock
called the crust
The crust is broken into very large
pieces called plates

The plates fit

together like the
pieces of a puzzle
They move together, apart, and
past each other
The place where two plates
meet is called a plate
boundary
February 2023
S.B pages 18-19
Plates movement at their boundaries!
Tension or forces that pull things
apart moves earth plates can
also be moved by pushing
force
Mountains form when plates push
together
An opening on the
earth’s surface
when melted rock
or gases are
forced out
most volcanoes
occur because of
moving plates
most volcanoes
happened near Volcano
plate pounders
