Partnership

Important Terms:
Partnership:
When two or more than two persons run a business
jointly, they are called partners and the deal is known
as partnership.
Working Partners:
A partner who manages the business is known as
a working partner.
Sleeping Partners:
A partner one who simply invests the money is a sleeping
partner.
Important Rule:
Ratio of investments = Ratio of Profit
Type 1: Same Investment Period
When investments of all the partners are
for the same time, the gain or loss is
distributed among the partners in the ratio
of their investments.

Example: A and B invest Rs. x and

Rs. y respectively for a year in a business,
then at the end of the year:

(A's share of profit) : (B's share of profit)

= x : y.
Mega and Sharu invest their money in a
business with the amount of Rs. 30000 and
Rs. 35000 for 1 year. Find the Ratio of their
profit.
(a) 4:5 (b) 7:3 (c) 6:7 (d) None of these
Mega and Sharu invest their money in a
business with the amount of Rs. 30000 and
Rs. 35000 for 1 year. Find the Ratio of their
profit.
(a) 4:5 (b) 7:3 (c) 6:7 (d) None of these
When time period is same then ratio of
investment is equal to the ratio of their profit.
Then ratio will be 30000:35000 = 30 : 35 = 6 : 7
A, B and C started a business by investing Rs.
250000 Rs. 300000 and Rs.350000 respectively.
Find the share of B, out of an annual profit of
Rs.187200.
(a) Rs. 65400 (b) Rs. 62400 (c) Rs. 63400
(d) Rs. 66200 (e) None of These

(d) Rs. 66200 (e) None of These
Ratio of shares of A, B and C = Ratio of their investment
A : B : C = 250000 : 300000 : 350000 = 5 : 6 : 7
Share of B = Rs. [187200 x 6 / 18] = 62400.
Type 2: Different Investment Period
When investments are for different time
periods, then equivalent capitals are
calculated for a unit of time by taking
(capital x number of units of time). Now
gain or loss is divided in the ratio of these
capitals.
Example: A invests Rs. x for p months and B
invests Rs. y for q months then,
(A's share of profit) : (B's share of
profit)= xp : yq
A, B and C invested capitals in the ratio 3:5:9; the
timing of their investments being in the ratio 2:3:1.
In what ratio would their profits be distributed?
(a) 2:5:3 (b) 3:2:5 (c) 7:5:3 (d) None of these

(a) 4 (b) 7 (c) 9 (d) None of these
Let Mice joins after x months.
Then Mice’s investments was for (12-x) months
Since the profits was divided equally.
54000×12=72000(12-x)=>X=3
Mice’s joined after 3 months or we can also say that he invested his money
for 9 months.
Type 3: Different time period and amount
When investments are for different time
periods, then equivalent capitals are
calculated for a unit of time by taking (capital
x number of units of time). Now gain or loss is
divided in the ratio of these capitals.
Example: A invests Rs. x for p months & Rs. C
for r months and B invests Rs. y for q months
& Rs. D for s months then,
(A's share of profit) : (B's share of profit)= (xp
+ Cr) : (yq + Ds)
A, B and C started a business each investing Rs.10000.
After 4 month A withdraws Rs.3000, B withdraws
Rs.4000, C invest Rs.3000 more At the end of the years,
a total profit was Rs.32800. Find the share of C.
(a) Rs. 10000 (b) Rs. 14400 (c) Rs. 17600 (d)

(a) Rs. 10000 (b) Rs. 14400 (c) Rs. 17600 (d)
Rs. 19200
Ratio of capital of A, B and C
=> (10,000×4+7000×8):(10,000×4+6000×8):(10,000×4+13000x8)
=> 96000 : 88000 : 144000
So, Ratio becomes 12 : 11:18
Distributing the final profit of Rs. 32800 in the given ratio,
the share of C becomes 14400.
Type 4: The contributions made by Ravi and
Suresh are in the ratio of 3:2. If 5% of total profit
is donated and Ravi gets 8550 as his share of
profit, what is the total profit?
(a) 14000 (b) 14500 (c) 15000 (d)15500
Type 4: The contributions made by Ravi and
Suresh are in the ratio of 3:2. If 5% of total profit
is donated and Ravi gets 8550 as his share of
profit, what is the total profit?
(a) 14000 (b) 14500 (c) 15000 (d)15500
Let the total profit = x
The ratio of contribution by Ravi and Suresh = 3:2
Ravi's share = (Ravi's ratio/ sum of all ratios)* total profit= (3/5) * x = 8550
Total profit= x= (8550*5)/3 = 14250
ATQ, the Ravi gets 8550 after 5 % donated
Now, 95% = 14250 => 1% = 14250/ 95
And, 100% = (14250/95) * 100 = 15000
Type 4: A, B and C jointly thought of engaging themselves in a
business venture. It was agreed that A would invest Rs. 6500 for
6 months, B, Rs. 8400 for 5 months and C, Rs. 10,000 for 3
months. A wants to be the working member for which, he was
to receive 5% of the profits. The profit earned was Rs. 7400.
Calculate the share of B in the profit.
(a) Rs. 1900 (b) Rs. 2660 (c) Rs. 2800 (d) Rs. 2840

months. A wants to be the working member for which, he was
to receive 5% of the profits. The profit earned was Rs. 7400.
Calculate the share of B in the profit.
(a) Rs. 1900 (b) Rs. 2660 (c) Rs. 2800 (d) Rs. 2840
For managing, A received = 5% of Rs. 7400 = Rs. 370.
Balance = Rs. (7400 - 370) = Rs. 7030.
Ratio of their investments = (6500 x 6) : (8400 x 5) : (10000 x 3)
= 39000 : 42000 : 30000 = 13 : 14 : 10
B's share = Rs. 7030 x 14/37 = Rs. 2660.
1) A, B, C hired a car for Rs. 520 and used it for 7, 8

the total amount received by P and R. Find the amount
received by R ?
(a) Rs. 1100 (b) Rs. 500 (c) Rs. 1200 (d) Rs. 700
P + Q + R = 1200
P = (Q + R)/2 => 2P = Q + R,Q = (P + R)/3 => 3Q = P + R
3P = 1200 => P = 400, 4Q = 1200 => Q=300
400 + 300 + R = 1200 => 1200 – 700 = R => R=500
3) Anand and Deepak started a business investing

5 : 7 : 8. They had partnered for 14 months, 8 months and 7
months respectively. What was the ratio of their
investments?
(a) 5 : 7 : 8 (b) 20 : 49 : 64
(c) 38 : 28 : 21 (d) None of these
Let their investments be Rs. x for 14 months, Rs. y for 8 months and
Rs. z for 7 months respectively.
Then, 14x : 8y : 7z = 5 : 7 : 8.
From options,
14 x 20 : 8 x 49 : 7 x 64 = 5:7:8
17) A, B, C subscribe Rs. 50,000 for a business. A
subscribes Rs. 4000 more than B and B Rs. 5000 more
than C. Out of a total profit of Rs. 35,000, A receives:
(a) Rs.8400 (b) Rs.11,900 (C) Rs.13,600 (d) Rs.14,700
17) A, B, C subscribe Rs. 50,000 for a business. A
subscribes Rs. 4000 more than B and B Rs. 5000 more
than C. Out of a total profit of Rs. 35,000, A receives:
(a) Rs.8400 (b) Rs.11,900 (C) Rs.13,600 (d) Rs.14,700

Let C = x, B = x + 5000 and A = x + 5000 + 4000 = x + 9000.

So, x + x + 5000 + x + 9000 = 50000
=> 3x = 36000 => x = 12000
A : B : C = 21000 : 17000 : 12000 = 21 : 17 : 12.
A's share = Rs. 35000 x 21/50 = Rs. 14,700.
18) Anu started a business with the amount of Rs.
27000 and after some months Kusum with the

(a) 4 (b) 6 (c) 7 (d) None of these
Suppose Kusum joined for x months.
Then, (27000 × 12)/ (36000 × x) = 3/2.
By solving for x, we get the value of x = 6.
Hence, Kusum joined for 6 months.
19) A and B invest in a business in the ratio 3 : 2. If
5% of the total profit goes to charity and A's share
is Rs. 855, the total profit is:
(a) Rs. 1425 (b)Rs. 1500
(c) Rs. 1537.50 (d) Rs. 1576
19) A and B invest in a business in the ratio 3 : 2. If
5% of the total profit goes to charity and A's share
is Rs. 855, the total profit is:
(a) Rs. 1425 (b)Rs. 1500
(c) Rs. 1537.50 (d) Rs. 1576
Let the total profit be Rs. 100.
After paying to charity, A's share = Rs. 95 x (3/5) = Rs. 57.
If A's share is Rs. 57, total profit = Rs. 100.
If A's share Rs. 855, total profit = 100 x 855/57 = 1500.
20) In a business, A and C invested amounts in the
ratio 2:1, whereas the ratio between amounts
invested by A and B was 3:2. If Rs. 1,57,300 was
their profit, how much amount did B receive ?
(a) 48400 (b) 54200 (c) 64000 (d) 74000

their profit, how much amount did B receive ?
(a) 48400 (b) 54200 (c) 64000 (d) 74000
A : B = 3 : 2 => B : A = 2 : 3 = 4 : 6 & A : C = 2 : 1 = 6 : 3.
So, B : A : C = 4 : 6 : 3 or A : B : C = 6 : 4 : 3.
B's share = Rs. (157300 x 4/13 ) = Rs. 48400.
