Visual test 22

Visual inspection is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method for detecting surface characteristics, corrosion, and potential leaks. It has advantages such as simplicity, speed, and low cost, but is limited by the tester's skill and the ability to detect only surface flaws. The document also discusses various types of visual testing, equipment used, and certification requirements for inspectors.

Visual test

Chapter 2
Introduction
• Visual inspection is the simplest, fastest and
most widely used NDT method.
• Visual inspection is commonly used to
support/ compliment other NDT methods.
• Digital Detector and computer technology
have made it possible to automate some
visual inspections
VISUAL TEST PURPOSES
Visual inspection is commonly used:
• To detect surface characteristics such
as finish, Scratches, cracks.
• To inspect corrosion.
• To check possible leakage.
Advantages of VT

• Simple and easy to use.

• Relatively inexpensive.
• Testing speed is high.
• Testing can be performed on
components which are in – service.
Limitations of VT

• The test result depend on skill

and knowledge of tester.
• Limited to detection of surface
flaws.
• Eye resolution is weak.
• Eye fatigue.
Visual test equipment

• These equipment can be

classified into two parts :
- Optical aids
- mechanical aids
Mechanical aids
• Several mechanical gauges are also
used to assist the visual inspection
examinations. So, those are some
kind of screw pitch gage, some kind
of angle measuring tool, outside
caliper, Vernier caliper, micrometer,
level indicator
Optical aids
• Used when direct visual examination is not
possible
– Microscopes
– Borescopes
– Fiberscopes
– Video Cameras
Classification of the visual testing

1.Unaided visual testing.

2.Direct aided visual testing
3.The remote visual testing.
Unaided visual testing
• This type of examination made in situations
where there is an access to the area of
interest without any possibility of injury to the
inspector.
• we can directly see that particular zone. There
is no interruption between the eye and the
object.
• Defects can be detected are cracks, corrosion
layer, surface porosity.
Direct aided visual testing

• The aided part has been added; the

nature of the image is not modified.
• Modifications of the image is only
allowed by magnification with for
example a mirror, a lens, an
endoscope.
Optical aids
Optical aids
The remote visual testing
• The nature of the image is
modified. Suppose in our surface
a very tiny crack but we cannot
see it by our naked eyes so that
time we are using some kind of
techniques as camera which can
convert it to electronic image.
Remote visual testing
Certification Requirements
• Must also pass annual eye exams
for:
1) Near vision acuity (sharpness of
vision) – Jaeger chart
2) Far vision acuity – Snellen chart
3) Color vision – Ishihara
Jaeger chart
• Jaeger chart Near
vision acuity is
addressed in NDT
certification
standards and one of
the most common
means to measure
near vision acuity for
NDT personnel
Snellen chart

• The so-called
“Snellen chart” is
an eye chart that
is used to
measure visual
acuity, or how
well somebody
sees.
Ishihara test
• The Ishihara test is a
color perception test
for red-green color
deficiencies. The test
consists of a number of
colored plates, called
Ishihara plates, each of
which contains a circle
of dots appearing
randomly in color and
size.
