About Articles
• An article is a piece of writing included with others in a
newspaper, magazine, or other print or online
publication.
• The purpose of articles is to inform, persuade, or
entertain readers on various topics.
• Depending on the publication articles can range from
formal to informal, engaging, and well-structured.
• It may be one of the forms of directed writing you may
be asked to write in Question 1 of your IGCSE exams.
Format For Articles
• Heading: Use a snappy heading eg. Fight for your Future.

• Byline: Byline can be used. With this the Authors name is written
under the title eg. By Fiction.
• Introduction: The introduction must be strong and must reel in
readers.
• Body: The Body must contain the main points and the supporting
detail. And it must be well structured.
• Conclusion: The Conclusion must also contain a strong closing
statement and must either leave the reader something to think
about or must summarise the entire article.
Article tips 1
• All paragraphs don’t have to be the same length

• Develop different ideas or points in each paragraph

• Avoid trying to repeat the same idea throughout the whole


article
• Avoid starting the article with “I am writing this because…” or
“In this article we will be discussing…”
• Be light hearted and entertaining, formal and serious, or
provide advice and tips, depending on the task set.
• Use a topic sentence

• You are to comment on the topic given

• It is not the same as a News reports

• Facts are expressed in a less condensed manner

• You can speak in the first person

• Your goal is not to be informative


Sample Article Question
Question

Write a magazine article for young people about modern friendship.

In your article you should:

• evaluate the ideas about friendship given in both texts

• explain, based on what you read, to what extent you think social media affects
friendship.

Base your article on what you have read in both texts, but be careful to use your own
words.

Address both of the bullet points.

Write about 250 to 350 words.

Up to 15 marks are available for the content of your answer, and up to 25 marks for the
quality of your writing.
