Exploring-Variables

The document is an introductory lesson on statistics, covering key concepts such as experiments, sample spaces, and types of statistics including descriptive and inferential statistics. It defines important terminologies like data, variable, population, and sample, and classifies variables into qualitative and quantitative types. The document also includes activities for students to classify variables and understand random variables.

CLASS
ACTIVITY 1: BY GROUP
In your previous lesson, you have learned
that an experiment is any activity, which can be
done repeatedly under similar condition. So, try this
experiment and list all down all the possible
outcomes. Experiment Possible outcome (Sample Space)
Tossing three coins HHH, HHT, HTH, HHT, THH, THT, TTH, TTT

STATISTICS
- It is a collection of methods for
planning experiments, obtaining
data, and then analyzing, interpreting
and drawing conclusions based on
the data.
TYPES OF STATISTICS
Descriptive Statistics – deals primarily
with the collection and organization of
data
Inferential Statistics - deals with making
inferences or conclusions about a
population based on the findings of the
study conducted on a sample.
TERMINOLOGIES
Data – are the values that variables can
assume.
Variable – is a charateristics that is
observable or measurable in every unit of
universe.
Population – is a set of all possible values
of variable
Sample – is subgroup of population
CLASIFICATION OF
VARIABLES
1. Qualitative Variables
- words or codes that represent a class
or category
- express a categorical attribute

Example : gender, religion, marital status,

highest educational attainment
2. Quantitative Variables
- number that represent an amount or
count.
- numerical data, sizes are meaningful
and answer questions as “how many” or
“how much”.
Example : height, weight, number of
registered cars.

b. Find the possible values of a random
variables;
c. Classify random variables as discrete
or continuous; and
d. Actively participate in the discussion.
EXPERIMENT
EXPERIMENT – any activity
which can be done repeatedly
under similar condition.
SAMPLE SPACE
SAMPLE SPACE – set of all
possible outcomes of an
experiment.

numbers can be assigned for the
frequency of heads that will
occur?
- The answer to this question requires an understanding of random
variables.
