Types of Plate Boundaries (2)

The document discusses the movement of tectonic plates and the types of plate boundaries: divergent, convergent, and transform. It explains the processes and geological features associated with each boundary type, including the formation of rift valleys, mid-ocean ridges, and mountain ranges. Additionally, it covers key concepts such as subduction, volcanic arcs, and the geological events that may occur at these boundaries.

Types of Plate Boundaries

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
-refer to plates that separate and
move apart in opposite directions
forming new lithosphere - the young
seafloor
DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
-is formed when two tectonic plates
move apart from each other
creating tension.
-is also known as a Constructive
Boundary as it create new crust
from the rising of magma
Key Concepts

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Upwarping
- a broad low arching of the surface of
the land
Rift Valley
-Also called “faulted valley”
-Results from the breaking of crust into
several segments, and also associated with
the rising of hot materials from the mantle
Linear Sea
-Results from the increase in length and depth
of a rift valley as spreading continues
Example of a linear sea is the RED SEA
Mid-Ocean Ridge
-is an underwater mountain range
Example of this is the Mid-Atlantic Ocean
Ridge

B. Plates flip around
C. Plates move apart
D. Plates crash into each other
2. A mid ocean ridge is a result of
what type of diverging plates?
A. ocean-ocean convergent
plates
B. continental-continental
divergent plates

A. earthquake
B. formation of rift valleys
C. widening of the ocean basin
D. subduction process
5. Divergent plate boundaries are
known to be constructive plate
boundaries because
A. old crust is destroyed at the
earth’s mantle
B. there is a formation of volcano and
mountain ranges
C. new crust is formed and creation
of ocean floor happens
D. no new crust is form
CONVERGENT PLATE
BOUNDARY
-are formed when two plates
move toward each other.
CONVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY
- this boundary is also called
a Destructive Boundary
since oceanic plate is
destroyed at this boundary

zones
Almost all the
boundaries on the
Philippine Plate are
convergent, making
it unique in terms of
tectonics.

HIMALAYAS
When the Indian and Eurasian plates collided
60 million years ago, the enormous mountain
range started to emerge. The continental crust
that makes up both plates is similar in weight and
thickness. Thus, the two plates started to
compress and elevate. The Himalayas' angular
peaks were created by the impact. The Indian
Plate is still moving and colliding with the Eurasian
Plate at a speed of 5 centimeters per year.
HIMALAYAS
• Formed from convergent boundary
between continental and
continental crust.
• If the convergence continues, the
HIMALAYAS WILL CONTINUE TO
RISE
TRANSFORM PLATE BOUNDARY
-are plates sliding past or slipping
past each other.
TRANSFORM PLATE
BOUNDARY
-is formed when two plates are
sliding past each other.
- it is also called the Strike-slip
fault
Transform Plate Boundaries
Transform Fault Boundaries
- Most transform faults join two
segments of a mid-ocean ridge
- two adjacent slabs of crust are
grinding past each other
Transform Fault Boundaries
This type of plate boundary is mostly found in
oceans, but there are a few that traverse through
continental crust. It is characterized by plates
moving slide past horizontally against each other,
producing a crack called a fault on the ground. The
force the plates exert can break the rocks and other
materials under the ground. The shaking usually
ends abruptly. This is why it brings about strong
earthquakes .

Key Terms
• SUBDUCTION
– Process or the bending of the crust
towards the mantle (Asthenosphere)
Key Terms
• TRENCH
– Also called submarine valleys, the
deepest part of the ocean
– Ex. Philippine Trench (10 540 meters)
Key Terms

– Series of volcanoes formed from the
convergence of a continental crust and
oceanic crust
Key Terms

– Series of volcanoes formed from the
convergence of a oceanic crust and

Key Terms
• ISLAND ARC/VOLCANIC ISLAND and

• TSUNAMIS
– a Japanese term for “harbor wave”
– are series of ocean waves with very long
wavelengths caused by large-scale
disturbances of the ocean or underwater
earthquakes
Key Terms

Nakita mong dumadaing sa sobrang
sakit ng tiyan ang iyong nakababatang
kapatid.
kanilang bahay, ngunit wala silang nakahandang
pambayad. Inutusan si Louie ng kaniyang ina na
sabihing wala siya at may mahalagang
pinuntahan.
nag-inuman. Gustong gusto mong
sumama dahil matagal na kayong
hindi lumalabas.Ngunit naalala mo ang
bilin ng iyong mga magulang tungkol
sa paggawa ng mabuti.
Isang araw, dumating ang isa sa pinaka
mahirap na pagsubok sa iyong buhay.
Kailangan ng pamilya mo ang malaking
halaga ng pera. Habang ikaw ay naglalakad,
may nakita kang wallet na nahulog. Walang
awayin.
Isang daan nalang ang natitira mong
pera. Dahil sa lockdown hindi ka
makaka-uwi upang humingi ng pera sa
iyong mga magulang. Wala ka nang
pagkain ngunit gustong-gusto mo nang
magload para makapag laro ng ML
para hindi ka maiwan ng mga kaibigan
mo.
