DESIGNING A MINI FURNITURE

SALAR ALAM MYP-1

Unit details
Global Context: Globalization and Sustainability.
Key concept: Communities
Related concepts: Egronomic, sustainability
A sustainable ergonomically inquiry leads to developing a solution for a specific group of
consumers.
"Develop a human-made sustainable design that may involve ergonomic nature for
communities". Salar Alam (student's initiative )
"Develop communities with sustainable commodities" Ashbel. (student's initiative)
Crit A i) explain and justify the need for a solution to a problem
for a specified client/target audience
Problem:
The main problem is that children get tired of sitting on chairs and sofas for a long period of time.
Explanation for a solution:
A solution is needed to reduce children’s irritability and tiredness of sitting on chairs and sofas. This reduces
their attention span and reduces their productivity. Chairs and sofas should be providing comfort for the
students.
Justification for a solution:
Uncomfortable chairs lead to muscles being stiff and children feeling tired with their bodies hurting. To reduce
this, we need to have a solution that can provide children with comfortable sitting material.
ii) identify and prioritize primary and secondary research needed to develop a solution to the problem

Questions for research:

1. What is the major problem you face

when you sit on chairs for a long time?

2. For how long are you able to sit on

wooden chairs?

3. If you need a comfortable chair, what do

TASK 2 - CRITERIA 3 (SOFA)
SALAR ALAM MYP-1
Step 1 – Gathering the
materials
Popsicle sticks
SpiZEr / UHU
Scissor
Paper cutter
Buttons

Gathering these items took me 3 days as my father had to get them from the shop.
Step 2 - Drawing
Draw a rough sketch
Color and shape
Think how to built it
Making the design of the materials on a graph paper
Drawing the final design
Experiencing a workshop to understand how to implement our drawings
Steps 3 – Preparing the materials
Cutting the popsicle sticks into the shapes of the parts required.
Pasting them into the final pieces then gluing them
Drying them
Designing Them
Step 4 - Construction
Making the Base
Making the legs
Making the sitting area of the sofa
Back rest
Connecting all the parts together
Finishing and painting the final product
TASK 3 – PLANNING,
DESCRIPTION AND
MODIFICATIONS
Sofa
C1 - Planning:
After the survey and gathering all material, I also decided to make a sofa
which was comfortable for the students for long hours.

C2 – The idea was to make a sofa with a design of the rocket. The sofa has a
rectangular base which gives it a unique look. Although this does not have a
foam right now but the cushion will be there to add comfort.

C3 – Modifications:
Because of the rocket look, it was not standing as the weight on the back
was more than the weight on the front. That is why I had to modify it to
give a rectangular base.
Cupboard
C1 - Planning:
After the survey and gathering all material, I decided to make a cupboard with
the material that I had for the other items.

C2 - The cupboard has been made by crossing the wood over each other. This
cupboard is sustainable, has style and can be considered as an amazing product.

C3 – Modifications:
Earlier cupboard had a big base and that is why the doors were not closing fine. I
cut the base to shorten it. After this modification, the cupboard design was
working fine.
Chair
C1 - Planning:
After the survey and gathering all material, I also decided to make a chair
which is comfortable for the students for long hours.

C2 – This is a chair with a comfortable back and a curved seat. The curved
back and seat is giving it a very unique look. The chair is not too low and not
too high. That is why it is comfortable for the students.

C3 – Modifications:
The first design worked fine and that is why no medication was needed.
TASK 4 – SURVEY AND
RESULTS
Testing methods
I made survey forms to gather student feedback on my
product.

Majority of the students said that they liked my product

design, especially the cupboard and the chair curves.

I was disappointed by the feedback of one student who

did not like my product at all.

I understand from survey that different people will have

different thoughts and based on feedback, I can always
improve my product.

Improving the product
 I could have made it more strong by doing accurate measurements.
 I could have added shelves in the cupboard
 I should have made the sofa stand properly by slowing down my pace.
 I should have colored it to make it look like a rocket, which was my initial goal.
 I could have used cotton to create the seat and back foam to show that this product is for
giving comfort to students.
Impact
 The sofa that I made had a unique base.
 My cupboard was perfect and also had moving doors.
 My chair was small but it had a cute, unique design.
 My chair looked better to the audience even without its color and seating foam.
