Angles-in-standard-Position

The document covers the concepts of angles in standard position, coterminal angles, and reference angles in precalculus. It defines coterminal angles as those sharing the same terminal side and provides methods to find both positive and negative coterminal angles. Additionally, it explains reference angles as the acute angles formed with the x-axis and includes examples and exercises for practice.

ANGLES IN STANDARD

POSITION, COTERMINAL
ANGLES AND REFERENCE
ANGLES
Precalculus (2nd Semester)
Learning Outcomes
•Determine the angles which are co-terminal
with a given angle in the standard position.
•Define a reference angle.
•Findthe reference angle of a given angle in
the standard position.
ANGLES IN THE
STANDARD POSITION
AND COTERMINAL
ANGLES
Angles in the Standard Position,
Coterminal Angles, and Reference Angles

An angle is said to be in the standard

position if its vertex is at the origin of the
rectangular coordinate system and its
initial side coincides with the positive x-
axis. Figure 9.5 shows angles in the
standard position.
Angles in the Standard Position,
Coterminal Angles, and Reference Angles
Two angles in the standard
position that have the
same terminal side are
called coterminal angles.
Figure 9.6 shows two
angles are coterminal.

Given an angle expressed

in degrees, all angles of
the from , where is any
integer, are coterminal
with .
Example
Solve the following:
a. Find two positive angles that are coterminal with an angle
that measures .
b. a. Find two negative angles that are coterminal with an
angle that measures .
c. Find one positive angle and one negative angle that are
coterminal with an angle measuring .
d. Find one positive angle and one negative angle that are
coterminal with an angle measuring radians.
e. Find a positive angle less than radians that is coterminal
with an angle measuring radians.

REFERENCE
ANGLES
Reference Angles
A reference angle is the acute angle
formed by the terminal side of a given
angle in the standard position and the x-
axis. Each of the figures below shows the
reference angle for each given angle
Reference Angles

Example
Find the reference angle for each
given angle in standard position.
Solution
a. The given angle is in the first quadrant,
hence, its reference angle is .
b. The given angle is in the second
quadrant, hence, its reference angle is .
c. The given angle is in the third
quadrant, hence, its reference angle is .
