CONSIDER A STATEMENT-
• “COMPUTERS ARE EVERYWHERE”-
• Does it sound like an overstatement?
• A cliché?
• No matter how you percieve the impact of
computers,this is TRUE
INTRODUCTION:
• With wide acceptance and usage of PCs & internet
connectivity, new possibilities for easy access to latest
developments in any field at global level have
emerged. Anyone can have easy access to information
not only on public health, but also on more specialized
aspects of dental practice.
• Internet can help get access to solutions that enhance
procurement systems and processes to redice costs &
effort thereby save time and improve efficiency.
• This seminar is aimed at exploring the use of Internet for
sharing scientific information.
WHAT IS A COMPUTER?
• Computer is an electronic device capable of accepting
information, processing it according to a prescribed set of
rules and supplying the results of the
processing.AWAD,1979.The primary elements of a computer
system centre around hardware(procedures and equipment)
and software(programmes and supportive activities).
• HARD-WARE : For a computer to function efficiently it must
be supported by peripheral devices to prepare and feed input
data and to produce output results. The functional
components common to all computers include
• 1)Input device- converts data or instructions into
electrical impulses.
• 2)Output device -transforms machine language to
human language.
• 3)Central processing unit – heart of the computer system
consisting of an arithmatic and logic unit and a control
unit.
• 4) Arithmatic logic unit- for all computer based arithmatic
calculations and logic comparisons.
• 5) Control unit- Central nervous system of CPU and it
assures correct usage of arithmatic and primary storage
units as well as input/output device.
INTERNET
• Internet is a network of networks a global
communications system that links together thousands
of individual networks. As a result any computer on any
network can communicate with any computer on any
other network.
• HISTORY-The seeds of internet were planted in
1969,when the Advanced Research Project
Agency(ARPA) of the US department of Defense began
connecting computers to different universities.The
resulting network was called APRANET.
• In mid 1980,another federal agency,the National
Science Foundation(NFS),established five
“supercomputing centres”that were available to anyone
who wanted to use them for the purpose of academic
research purpose.
• The link between APRANET ,NFSnet and other network
was called the internet.
• The process of connecting separate networks is called
internetworking.A collection of “networked networks” is
described as being internetworked, which is where the
INTERNET –a worldwide network of networks-gets
its name.
• The internet acts as a carrier for several different
services, each with its own distinct features and
purposes. The most commonly used Internet services:
• WORLD WIDE WEB
• ELECTRONIC MAIL
• NEWS
• FILE TRANSFER PROTOCOL
• CHAT
• INSTANT MESSAGING
• ONLINE SERVICES
• PEER TO PEER SERVICES
VARIOUS TERMINOLOGY:
• The Internet and the world wide web (www) are not
synonymous.
• The World Wide Web was created in 1989 at the
European Particle Physics
Laboratory,Geneva,Switzerland. It is one of the services
accesible via the Internet, along with various others
including e-mail.
• URL-Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of
documents and other resources on world wide web.
• http-hypertext transfer protocol, transfer hypertext
request and information between servers and browsers.
PARTS OF URL:
• It has 2 parts: (1)protocol identifier (2) resource name
• Protocol identifier indicate what protocol to be used
• Resource name identifies IP address or the domain name where the resource is located .
• The protocol identifier and resource name are separated by a colon and two slash for eg-
• For example, the two URLs below point to two different files at the domain
pcwebopedia.com. The first specifies an executable file that should be fetched using the
FTP protocol; the second specifies a Web page that should be fetched using the
HTTP protocol:
• ftp://www.pcwebopedia.com/stuff.exe http://www.pcwebopedia.com/index.html
• HYPERLINK:its simply a part of the Webpage that is
linked to a URL.
• A hyperlink can appear as text,an image,or a navigation
tool such as a button or an arrow.
• We can click a hyperlink and jump from the present
location to the URL specified by the hyperlink.
• SEARCHING THE WEB:
• The two most basic and commonly used Web based
search tools are:
• 1.Directories
• 2.Search Engines
• DIRECTORIES: enables us to search for information by
selecting categories of subject matter.
