The document explains linear regression and the concept of the line of best fit, which visually represents the relationship between two variables and allows for predictions beyond the collected data. It describes the linear equation format, the interpretation of slope and y-intercept, and the significance of R-squared in assessing the fit of the model. Additionally, it highlights the application of linear regression for predicting values based on new data.

Regression

Nisma Merdad
Line of best
fit
When using a scatter graph to show a
data set, the line of best fit can
provide a visual representation of the
relationship between two factors, as
well as predict values beyond the data
collected.

This is called the line of best fit or

a linear regression
linear regression, is a straight line that
Regressi best illustrates the overall picture of
what the collected data is showing. It
on helps us to see if there is a relationship
or correlation between the two factors
being studied. This regression line helps
us to predict future events relating to
the data being studied
Regression

The line is expressed by a linear equation of the form

Regressi = y-intercept +( slope* x)

on For any given value of x, this equation gives a predicted

value for the response variable .
Slope

Y-intercept
Regression
• Interpretation:
• Slope ( b): Indicates the direction and strength of the relationship. Positive
slope means both variables increase together, while a negative slope means
as one increases, the other decreases.

• ( R^2 ): Represents the proportion of variance in the dependent variable

explained by the independent variable(s). Ranges from 0 to 1, with higher
values indicating a better fit.
Predictions
Linear regression can used for prediction. This means that, using the
linear model, values of the response variable can be predicted for
new data that were not part of the original data.

For example, if the slope of the regression line is a, then one can say
"Every 1 unit increase in X is associated with an approximately (slope
b) unit increase in Y."
