Lesson Solve Problems Involving
Conversion of Time Measure
In this lesson you will learn to visualize,
and represents, and solve problems involving
conversion of time measure. Remember that in
this module you will learn about measuring time.
Second, minute, hour and day are units of time
measure. Therefore if you mastered already
measurement, you will find it easy and useful in
daily life.

What’s New

Activity 1
During school days, Rex has to go to
school at six-thirty in the morning for her
classes. How do we show six-thirty using the
clock?

• What does the short hand tell?

• What has the long hand tell?

• How do we write six-thirty

morning?
Activity 2

At 9:45 A.M., mother started

preparing lunch for her family. She
finished cooking at 11:15 A.M. How long
did it take her to prepare lunch?
What’s More
1. There are several ways to read the time.
Six-thirty
Or Thirty minutes after six
Or Half fast six
We write 6:30 A.M.
The short hand of the clock tells the hour. It is
called the hour hand. If it points at 6, we read the
number as 6, if it points to 10, we read it as 10, and
so on.
The long hand tells the minutes. It is called the
minute hand. We read the minute hand just like
skip counting by 5. If the long hand points at 1, we
read it as 5; if it points at 2, we read as 10, if it
points at 6, we read it as 30 and so on.
A.M. indicates the time between 12 midnight
up to before 12 noon.
P.M. indicates the time between 12 noon up to
2. Let us find out how long mother prepared lunch
for her family.
From 9:45 to 10:45 was 1 hour
From 10:45 to 11:00 was 15 minutes
From 11:00 to 11:15 was 15 minute

So mother prepared lunch for 1 hour and 30

minutes.
The elapsed time is 1 h and 30 min. We use the
abbreviations h
for hour and min for minutes.
To find how much time has elapsed, count from
the starting time. Here is a shortcut to get elapsed
time.
11:15 10 h and 75 min.
9:45 - 9 h and 45 min.
1 h and 30 min.
The elapsed time between 9:45 A.M. and 11:15
Activity Time: What’s More

letter of the correct answer on a separate sheet

What I Have Learned
Measures of Time:
1. The clock has two hands that moves in a
clockwise
Direction. The short hand is the hour hand
that tells the Hour. The long hand is the
minute hand that tells the Minutes.

2. A.M. is used to tell times from 12 midnight up

to before 12 noon. P.M. is used to tell time
from 12 noon up to Before 12 midnight.

3. We can use the expression before, after,

quarter to, Quarter past, and half past to
tell time.
Units of Time:
1. These are some units to measure time.
1 minute (m) = 60 seconds (s)
1 hour (h) = 60 min 1 week =
7 days
1 day (d) = 24 h
2. One unit of time can be changed to another unit. To
Change a bigger unit of time measure to a smaller
unit,We multiply.
Example: 2 hours = _________ minutes
How many minutes in 1 hour? 60
2 x 60 = 120
3. To change a smaller unit of time measure to a
bigger unit,We divide.
Example: 360 seconds = ________minutes
How many seconds are there in 1
minute?
1 min = 60 s
360 s 60 s = 6
