and Learning.

By: Marisol O. Anciado

And
John Paul T. Badajos, MLIS
Objective

• To develop a foundational understanding of

technology's role in education, encompassing ICT
competency standards, basic ICT concepts, and the
diverse applications of ICT in teaching and learning,
enabling pre-service teachers to effectively integrate
technology into their future classrooms.
Outline

Pre-service Teacher Education
II. Understanding the Basic Concepts in ICT
III. Roles of ICT in Teaching for Learning
Introduction

• Let us examines the crucial role of technology in

modern education, focusing on its integration into
teaching and learning. We will explore the key
concepts, competency standards, and the
transformative potential of ICT in the classroom. Our
goal is to understand how technology can empower
both teachers and learners in the 21st century.
I. ICT Competency Standards for Philippine Pre-service Teacher
Education

Objectives:
1. Identify the competency standard of
ICT necessary in Teaching for pre-
service teacher education.
2. Familiarize with the ISTE National
Educational Technology Standard for
Teachers.
vs

Who is better equipped to handle

the 21st Century Learners?
ICT Competency Standards (CHED-UNESCO) as provided
in the 2017, Policy, Standards and Guidelines (PSG) for
Pre-Service Teacher Education.
“demonstrate proficiency in the development and
utilization of information, communication and
Technology (ICT) resources in promoting quality
teaching-learning process.”
ICT Competency Standards is composed of Seven (7)
domains. Each domains has a set of competencies and
are expressed in the desired learning outcomes.

Becoming proficient in the different competencies will

enable pre-service teachers to handle learners of the
21st century in your future classroom.

So what is a derived competency?
A derived competency is a skill or ability that is developed as a result of learning or mastering other competencies.
It's like building blocks: you need to have certain foundational skills in place before you can develop more complex
ones.

Here's a simple analogy:

– Basic Competency: Learning to read.
– Derived Competency: Being able to analyze and critique literature.

You need to be able to read (basic competency) before you can develop the ability to analyze and critique literature
(derived competency).

Derived competencies are important because they often represent higher-level skills that are valuable in many areas
of life, both personally and professionally. They demonstrate a deeper understanding and mastery of a subject or skill.

Here are some other examples of derived competencies:
• Basic Competency: Learning basic math skills.
• Derived Competency: Being able to apply those skills to solve complex engineering
problems.

• Basic Competency: Learning to play a musical instrument.

• Derived Competency: Being able to compose original music.

• Basic Competency: Learning a new language.

• Derived Competency: Being able to effectively negotiate business deals in that language.

Essentially, derived competencies are the result of building upon foundational skills and
knowledge to achieve more complex and sophisticated abilities.

What is ICT?
- ICT stands for Information and
Communication Technology which
refers to technologies used to handle
telecommunications, broadcast media,
intelligent building management
systems, audiovisual processing, and
network-based control and monitoring
functions. It encompasses a range of
digital tools, systems, and resources
that facilitate communication,
information sharing, and collaboration.
Key Components of ICT
• Hardware – Physical devices such as computers, tablets,
smartphones, projectors, and interactive whiteboards.
• Software – Programs and applications that run on hardware,
including learning management systems (LMS), word
processors, and educational apps.
• Networks and Internet – Connectivity components that
allow access to online resources, cloud computing, and
digital collaboration.
• Data and Information Management – Methods and systems
for storing, retrieving, and processing information, including
databases and cloud storage.
• Communication Tools – Email, video conferencing, social
media, and instant messaging that facilitate interaction
between students and teachers.
ICT in Teaching and Learning
Integrating ICT in education provides several benefits, including enhanced student
engagement, personalized learning, and improved access to information. Below are
examples of ICT applications in teaching and learning:

• Interactive Learning – Use of smartboards and multimedia presentations to create

engaging lessons.

• E-Learning Platforms – Learning Management Systems (LMS) like Google

Classroom, Moodle, and Blackboard facilitate online instruction.

• Educational Apps and Games – Tools like Kahoot!, Duolingo, and Quizlet help
reinforce learning through interactive activities.

• Virtual and Augmented Reality – Technologies like VR headsets can provide

immersive experiences for subjects like history and science.

• Collaborative Tools – Google Docs, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom enable real-time
collaboration and discussions among students and teachers.
