MK Refresher training on M&E data analysis

The document outlines the objectives and methodologies for analyzing household (HH) datasets related to Community Fisher Groups (CFGs) to assess their social, economic, and biological performance. It includes a detailed structure for data collection, analysis, and reporting, along with various indicators to evaluate fishing activities, income, food security, and CFG governance. The document emphasizes the importance of data cleaning and processing to derive meaningful insights about community dependence on fishing livelihoods.

Practical: Simple analysis of HH

datasets

FRDN data analysis workshop

22-23 Jan 2019
Objective of the HH survey
• Overall objectives are to monitor the development of
Community Fisher Groups (CFGs) and their functioning, and
performance from a social, economic and biological
perspectives
• The approach assesses outcome of the management practices
on the social equity, economic productivity and biological
sustainability
• Questionnaire was used to generate SE data

Synthesis and presenting of findings
Tentative main content of report
• Introduction
• Data analysis and interpretation
• Socio-economic characteristics
• Fisheries related livelihood activities by households
• Fisheries resources consumption
• Access to fishing and fisheries related livelihood
• CFG as an organization
• CFG management of fisheries resources
• Conclusions and recommendations
Illustrations
• Charts, graphs, maps, figures.
Potential Reporting structure

• Introduction to the site and objective • CFG as a fisheries resource management

of the study/survey organization
• Data collection methodology/approach - The CFG identify
- Management structure
• Socio-economic characteristics - Internal rule and regulation
– Demography - Planning and decision making
– Housing and other assets - Gender and woman roles
• Fisheries related livelihood activities - Consultation and engagement of others
– Structure and involvement in fishing • CFG management of fisheries resources
and fish related livelihood activities - Type of fisheries under its management and
area
• Sources of fisheries resources - Segmentation of the fisheries area and
consumed establishment of boundary
– Type, amount, seasonality - Designation of non-fishing zones
– Fish consumption, nutrition and food - Available management/action plan
security concerns - CFG financing
- Awareness raising
• Access to fishing and fisheries related
- Patrolling
livelihoods
– Access to fishing
• Conclusions
• Recommendations
– Access to other productive resources
and commodities
– Control of access
Refreshing some steps in last
training
• Cleaning the dataset, if not yet done so by:
– Checking if the data are correctly entered
– Identifying and correcting all the mistakes
• Create a copy of dataset under a new file for processing
• Group responses to open questions
• Assign code to the category of responses to open
questions
• Enter codes in the dataset using book of codes and the
assigned codes for responses to open questions
• Transpose dataset on the excel sheet
Making sense of the
data
DATA
PROCESSING
For example: define percentage of HHs involved in fishing (Col.
X)
STEP-BY-STEP
 Hide unnecessary columns by selecting all unnecessary communes and
hide
 Filter for responses with answer yes (1)
 Count responses ‘yes’ against all responses
 Get the percentage

MAKING SENSE
o This analysis shows how many HHs in the lease do involve in fishing
so reflects the level of dependence of the community on fishing to
support their living.

RECOMMENDED TO USE A DIFFERENT COPY OF YOUR DATASET FOR EACH ANALYSIS
