Introduction to
Simulation
Simulation is a powerful tool that allows students and
professionals to understand and predict the behavior
of complex systems.

By creating virtual models, simulation offers a safe and

cost-effective way to experiment with different
scenarios and solutions without directly intervening
in the real system.

Benefits of Simulation

Cost savings
Simulation allows different alternatives and scenarios to be
evaluated without incurring the real costs of the system, which
facilitates more efficient decision-making.

Risk Mitigation
By experimenting with virtual models, users can identify and
anticipate potential problems or risks before implementing solutions
in the real world.
Benefits of Simulation

Optimization
Simulation allows users to test and tune different system
parameters, with the goal of finding the optimal configuration that
maximizes performance.

Learning and Understanding

By interacting with simulated models, students and professionals
can develop a better understanding of the dynamics and
complexity of systems.
Limitations of Simulation

Model quality
The validity of simulation results depends largely on the
accuracy and level of detail that the model use.

System Complexity
Some systems may be too complex to be accurately modeled,
which can lead to imprecise or incomplete results.

Required Resources
Simulation may require a significant investment in terms of
time, technical expertise, and computational resources,
which can limit its application.

Continuous Systems

Variables change continuously

over time. These systems are
commonly modeled using
differential equations and are
used, for example, in the
analysis of electrical circuits
and the study of fluid dynamics.

characterized by the
occurrence of events, such as
the arrival of a customer in a
queuing system or the failure of
a machine in a production line.

Hybrid Systems

Combine features of continuous

and discrete-event systems.
These systems are found, for
example, in electric vehicles,
where the dynamics of the
electric motor can be modeled
as a continuous system, while
gear changes can be considered
as discrete events.
Emerging Technologies and Trends of Simulation

Big Data
The increasing availability of big data sets is driving the development of more accurate and
detailed simulation models.

Hand-on activity

Group Tasks:

Organize in groups (3 – 4 people).

Each group receives a card with a case.
• Answer the questions.
• Identify if the system is continuous, discrete, or hybrid.
• Discuss two benefits and two limitations of simulating the
system.
• In front to classmates, each group expose the propose about a
possible simplified model of the system (no need for details,
just a conceptual idea) in 5 minutes.
