INTRODUCTION TO CATIA V5
• Catia is also known as computer aided three-dimensional
interactive application.
• CATIA was started in 1977 by French Aircraft
Manufacturer Avions Marcel Dassault System.
• It is also used in aerospace, automotive, ship building,
and other industries.
• CATIA is developed by DASSAULT system and IBM
• Its programming is written in c++ language Fig.1 CATIA V5

THE SPECIFICATION TREE
• Definition: The Specification Tree shows the structure and
components of your design in a clear, hierarchical format.
• Location: It is found on the left side of the CATIA interface.
• Purpose: Helps you navigate, organize, and edit your design
easily.
• Structure: Displays all design elements like parts, sketches,
features, and assemblies in a step-by-step order.
• Actions: You can select, edit, hide/show, or delete items
directly from the tree.

• Error Handling: Highlights issues or dependencies in your

design for quick resolution.
CATIA MODULES
Sketcher : Sketcher consists 3 Toolbars,
 Profile Toolbar
 Contains tools to create basic shapes in 2D sketches.
 Common tools include: Line, Rectangle, Circle, Ellipse, Spline.
 Operation Toolbar
 Used to perform operations on sketches.
 Includes: Trim, Mirror, Offset, Rotate, Scale Project 3D Elements.
 Constraint Toolbar
 Ensures sketches are fully defined and precise.
 Includes: Dimensional Constraint, Geometrical Constraint, Fix
5
Constraint, Coincidence, Symmetry.
TOOL BARS IN PART DESIGN

 The Part Design application is used to create solid models of parts

 Solid parts are usually created from 2D profiles that are extruded or revolved to form a base
feature
 Parts can be modified by selecting their features in the specification tree.

WIREFRAME AND SURFACE
 Used to create complex 3D shapes and surfaces.
 Ideal for designing aesthetic curves and freeform surfaces like in car bodies or aircraft.
 Includes tools for extrusions, sweeps, and lofts.

ASSEMBLY DESIGN TOOLBARS
 Combines multiple parts to create a complete assembly.
 Adds constraints like alignments, mating, and offsets to position parts accurately

ASSEMBLY DESIGN
 Combine Parts: Join multiple parts to create a
complete product.
 Add Constraints: Use tools like align and mate to
position parts correctly.
 Bottom-Up Design: Import existing parts into the
assembly.
 Collision Check: Ensure no parts overlap or interfere.
 Exploded Views: Show how parts fit together visually. Fig.3 Assembly Design

 Simulate Movement: Test how parts move, like gears

or hinges.
9
SHEET METAL DESIGN
 Designs sheet metal components like enclosures, brackets, or panels.
 Provides tools for creating bends, flanges, cutouts, and folds.
 Includes unfolding and flat-pattern generation for manufacturing .
