PSUnit II Lesson 6 Applying the Normal Curve Concepts in Problem Solving

The document outlines a lesson on applying normal curve concepts to solve word problems, emphasizing the development of reasoning habits. It includes examples that demonstrate how to find raw scores corresponding to specific percentiles in a normally distributed dataset. Additionally, it illustrates the process of determining frequencies using probabilities in a given distribution.

APPLYING THE NORMAL CURVE

CONCEPTS IN PROBLEM SOLVING

Lesson Objectives

At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

1. apply the normal curve in solving word

problems; and
2. Develop habits of reasoning using the normal
curve concepts.
Example 1

The results of a nationwide aptitude test in

mathematics are normally distributed with µ = 80
and σ = 15. Find the raw scores such that 70% of
the cases are below it.
Example 1
STEPS SOLUTION

1. Sketch the diagram of a normal

curve.

2. Selecting 30%, express this as area. 30% is the same as 0.3000.

This is the area to the right of the z-
value we want to locate.
3. Find the difference of the areas 0.5000 – 0.3000 = 0.2000
between 0.5000 and 0.3000.

4. Find the area 0.2000 or the value The nearest area is 0.1985.
nearest to it in the Table of Areas
Under the Normal Curve.
5. Find the z-value that corresponds z = 0.52 ↔ the area is 0.1985.
to 0.1985.
Example 1
STEPS SOLUTION
6. Find a computing formula
for determining raw
scores.
7. Modify the formula to
solve for X.
8. Substitute the given values
in the modified formula to
solve for X.
9. Make a concluding In the distribution. 70% of
statement. the scores are below the
score 88.
Example 2
In the same problem, what is the score that divides the
distribution such that 99% of the cases is below it?
STEPS SOLUTION
1. Sketch the diagram of a normal
curve.

2. Selecting 1%, express this as 1% is the same as 0.0100.

right of the z-value that we
want to locate.
3. Find the difference of the areas 0.5000 – 0.0100 = 0.4900
between 0.5000 and 0.0100.
4. Find the area 0.4900 or the The nearest area is 0.4901.
value nearest to it in the z-
table.
Example 2
STEPS SOLUTION
5. Find the z-value that z = ______ ↔ the area is
corresponds to 0.4901. 0.4901.
6. Find a computing formula
for determining raw
scores.
7. Substitute the given
values in the modified
formula to solve for X.
9. Make a concluding In the distribution. 99% of
statement. the scores is below the score
___.
Example 3
With and , what are the scores that bound the middle
95% of the distribution?
STEPS SOLUTION
1. Sketch the diagram of a normal
curve.

2. Five percent (5%) is left at the 5% is the same as 0.0500.

two tails of the distribution.
Express it as area. This is the
area to right of the z-value that
we want to locate.
3. We are interested in the two 0.0500 ÷ 2 = 0.0250
areas at the tails of the
distribution. So, we divide 0.05
by 2.
Example 3
STEPS SOLUTION
4. Find the difference of the
areas at the 0.5000 and
0.0250.
5. Find the area 0.4750 or the

6. Find the z-table that z = 1.96 ↔ the area is 0.4750.
corresponds to 0.4750.
7. Use the z-values at both sides The other z-value is ___________.
of the distribution.

8. Find a computing formula for

determining raw scores.
Example 3
STEPS SOLUTION
9. Modify the formula to
