Cot Power Point in Earth Science-Internal Structure of the Earth

The document outlines the internal structure of the Earth, dividing it into three main layers: the crust, mantle, and core, with further subdivisions. It describes the characteristics of each layer, including their composition, thickness, and temperature, as well as the boundaries between them, such as the Mohorovicic Discontinuity and Lehmann Discontinuity. Additionally, it includes an educational activity using a hard-boiled egg to model the Earth's layers and a group evaluation exercise.

THE INTERNAL

THE EARTH LAYERS
THE LAYERS OF
THE EARTH
The Earth is divided
into
different layers:
A.CRUST
B.MANTLE
C.CORE
C.1 Outer core
c.2 Inner Core
A. THE CRUST

.Outermost/thinnest layer
o Occupies 1%of earth’s
volume
o Extends from the surface
to about 32-40 km below
o underneath some large
mountains ,the crust’s
thickness extends to 72 km
2 PARTS OF THE CRUST
a.CONTINENTAL CRUST
b.OCEANIC CRUST
CONTINENTAL CRUST
-30-50 km thick
-found under land masses , made up of less
dense rock granite (rich with Silicon,
Oxygen, calcium, sodium, potassium and
Aluminum )

OCEANIC CRUST
-7.5 km thick
- Composed of BASALT rocks rich with
Silicon, Iron , and magnesium
Take note:
*

Basalt is denser than granite , therefore Oceanic Crust is Denser than

Continental crust
Why do you think Basalt is denser than granite?
MOHORIVICIC
DISCONTINUITY/MOHO
-A zone that separates the
crust and the mantle/
the boundary between
these two layers
- Named after
Yugoslavian seismologist
ANDRIJA MOHOROVICIC
B.THE MANTLE
- A dense, hot layer of semi-solid
rock approximately 2,900 km
thick with depth
- Hotter and denser because
temperature and pressure
inside the earth increase
- The largest layer , it makes up
about 80% of the earth’s total
volume
- Mainly made up of silicate
: 2 REGIONS OF THE MANTLE
a. UPPER MANTLE ( Asthenosphere
&
Lithosphere)
b. LOWER MANTLE (Mesosphere)
• Lithosphere- “rock sphere”
- the crust and the rigid upper part of
the mantle
• Asthenosphere- “weak sphere”- found
below the lithosphere/soft or weak
layer of the mantle on which the
lithosphere seems to float
• Mesosphere- “middle sphere”
GUTENBERG
DISCONTINUITY
-the boundary between the lower

mantle and outer core

-Named after the German
Seismologist BENO
GUTENBERG
C. THE CORE
-Innermost and central region of
the earth’s interior
-Twice as dense as the mantle
because its composition is
metallic( iron-nickel alloy
-2 parts of the core
c.1. Outer core
OUTER CORE
-A 2,250 km thick liquid
outer core made up iron
and nickel
- temperature reaches up
to
2000oC
- mainly made up of iron
and nickel moving around
the solid inner core ,
creating earth’s
LEHMANN DISCONTINUITY
- The boundary between the outer
and the inner core
- Named after Danish seismologist
INGE LEHMANN
INNER CORE
- the deepest layer of the
earth
- mainly made up of solid
iron and nickel
- 1,250 km thick
- temperature reaches up
to 5000oC
Why do you think the inner core is solid despite the very high temperature?
