ENG 1430

Design in Engineering

Communication
Communication
Who do engineers communicate with?
• With other engineers
• With other professionals
• With other teams
• With clients
• With the public
Stepwise, Sequential
Design
• Design proceeds in a well defined, independent
manner
• Engineering Design
• Manufacturing
• Sales and Marketing
• Product Delivery
“Over-the-
Wall”
Engineering
Stepwise, Sequential
Design
Challenges with sequential design:
• Communication between groups is poor
• Time consuming redesign as problems discovered
• Departmental boundaries
Concurrent Design
• A process in which all design professionals work
together on the project from the beginning
• It provides a forum for all perspectives to be heard
Concurrent Design
• Involves ALL those concerned on the Design Team
• Input as the design process proceeds
• Still the same system, just more points of view
(Better chance for timely “Feedback”).
Benefits of Concurrent
Design
• Increases likelihood that engineers can identify safety
and reliability problems before a design is completed
• Increases likelihood of a ‘successful’ design
• Improves design efficiency
• We do not want to harm the user
Review of
Communication Skills
As a good communicator…..
• Do you listen well without interrupting?
• Can you restate the problem to demonstrate
understanding?
• Can you express your ideas clearly and concisely?
• Can you solicit feedback and accept criticism?
Communication skills
 Professional voice
 Appropriate conventions
 Figurative language
 Body language
 Reports and presentations

 See Text pgs. 318-359 (mini-test #2 readings)
