Education in Spain

The education system in Spain consists of several stages: non-mandatory early childhood education (0-3 years), mandatory preschool (3-6 years), primary education (6-12 years), compulsory secondary education (ESO, 12-16 years), and university preparation (Bachillerato, 16-18 years). Students take a series of exams called 'selectividad' after Bachillerato to qualify for university, where most degrees last four years. Vocational training is also available, with two stages that allow students to enter the workforce or pursue higher education without taking the selectividad exams.

EDUCATION

IN SPAIN
EDUCACIÓN INFANTIL
(KINDERGARDEN)

From 0 to 3 years old, this kind of education is not mandatory and is mostly
used in cases where parents’ jobs don’t allow them to take care of their
children all day long. This is the first chance for children to get in touch with
other children and socialise.
EDUCACIÓN PREESCOLAR
(EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION)
From 3 to 6 years old, this is a mandatory stage of education that prepares
children for Primary School. Here children start learning basic mathematical
and linguistic concepts such as sums, substractions, learning how to read and
how to write.
EDUCACIÓN PRIMARIA
(PRIMARY EDUCATION)
From 6 to 12 years old. This is the longest education period in Spain and
children already have different subjects such as mathematics, Spanish
language, English, physical education, IT, natural sciences, religion (or ethics,
if the parents are not religious), art and other subjects that may vary
according to the region of Spain.
EDUCACIÓN SECUNDARIA OBLIGATORIA
(ESO)
(SECONDARY EDUCATION)
From 12 to 16 years old, teenagers switch from “colegio” (school) to
“instituto” (high school). This is a crucial momento for the education of
people, especially the last year as they can choose to focus more on STEM
related subjects or social and linguistics studies. When a person gets their
“ESO” diploma they can either choose to keep studying to go to university, to
master a profesión or they can simply start to work.
BACHILLERATO
(UNIVERSITY PREPARATION)

From 16 to 18 years old, students can choose between different plans of

study so they can prepare for the knowledge field they would like to study at
university.
- Science and technology (mathematics, technology, physics…)
- Health science (mathematics, biology, chemistry…)
- Linguistic studies (third foreign language, Latin, Ancient Greek…)
- Social studies (applied mathematics, economy, history and geography…)
- Art studies (music, theatre, Art history…)
SELECTIVIDAD
A very feared word among Spanish students, “selectividad” are a series of
exams taken after finishing “bachillerato”. The marks you get at those exams
will allow you (or not) to study the career you want and enter the university. If
you take exams of a subject related to the degree you would like to study you
will have more points to enter. Marks go from 0 to 14 and the most demanded
degree in Spain is Medicine. People should get more than a 13 in order to
start their studies on medicine, although this marks varies according to the
amount of people interested on such degree.
UNIVERSITY
University students usually start their degrees when they are 18 years old.
Most degrees last for 4 full years that are usually completed with 1 year of a
Master’s Degree. Some others, like medicine can take 6 years to be
completed.
FORMACIÓN PROFESIONAL
(VOCATIONAL TRAINING)
These studies train students to master certain professions. There are two
main stages:
- Ciclo medio: from 16 to 18 years old.
- Ciclo superior: from 18 to 20 years old. People who get this diploma can
also go to university without having to pass “selectividad”, but their career
paths are limited to the different degrees related to the profession they
were instructed into.
